Older Guys?

Geeze,
I am 46 to tomorrow. I wish the heck I could get any kind of motivation to work out. my weight bench has been sitting collecting dust for almost 15 years. When I was younger I was not very motivated either. I played football (lineman, linebacker and kicker!) After school I just decided that any kind of organized fitness was not going to happen. Sure I kicked butt around the house/property but never got into cardio or weights. My wife, kids and I are trying to walk more now (about 1 to 2 miles in the evenings). I really stopped the weights because I blew out my back and it's never been the same. A few months ago I messed up my right elbow turning a freaking wrench working on the suspension of my wife's car. Funny thing is, week 3 of T and I am starting to get the urge to work out. I think past injuries were related to muscle waste from lack of T. This weekend I may dig the bench out of mothballs and start to lift. I am sure this will help with progress and make me fell better and maybe even get the BG lower too.

By the way, I think I am an older guy at 46. :/

mm: thanks for your thoughts on resistance bands. you go at it a lot harder than i'm able to at this point. maybe some day.

vince: your shoulder-hanging suggestions and links have been super helpful. my right rotator cuff hasn't felt better in years. now if i can just keep myself from over doing it ...

also, vince, regarding the NO stack. for some reason, what with all the talk about 'pump', i thought there was mostly some kind of visual / psychological benefit to it. but you're saying it also helps build muscle?
could you tell me a little bit more about that aspect of the stack? i started to do it, then slacked off, when i gathered it had no benefits of the kind i'm interested in. maybe i was wrong about that. and, when do you take the stack? only pre-workout on workout days? i'm hoping that's the case, 'cause i just couldn't see doing it every day.
thanks!

I think that keeping the muscle in the state of tension is more important as we age. I try to keep the muscle working, rather than focus on how much weight or tension I am moving. If you can tap into a mind muscle connection, you are less likely to get hurt, focusing on creating as much tension in The muscle as you can tends to work the muscle while protecting the joint, at least for me it does. In other words, try to make it about how much tension you are creating rather than moving a piece of equipment. When you're younger, you like to throw weights around and judge improvement by how much you're moving. As we get older, I think it makes more sense to focus on how much tension we are creating, get into the mind muscle connection, pump, congested feeling or whatever you call it. Getting older won't make the numbers possible. You can create a better physique however. Also, focusing on the tension in the muscle protects joints, I can't stress that enough. It's really hard to flexor muscle so hard that you injure it. It's easy to stress out a joint if the joint is under more pressure than I can handle. That's just my take on it however, others might have different views. I try to work out, and not get injured, and be able to work out again to days later. Marathon not a sprint!

linter, when I started using L-Citrulline DL-Matate 2:1 I really did feel it in my workout. L-Citrulline malate helps the transfer of important nutrients to the muscle and aides in your muscle growth and repair. It helps to eliminate Lactic Acid and Ammonia through the Urea Cycle. In other words… you will be able to do more sets and reps without getting tired as fast.
The hanging exercises saved me from surgery. :)

thanks, vince. so, you did not go gene d's full stack? i've got citrulline, albeit not the malate version; guess i'll give that a try.

I also notice that Virginian and Vince are running at over 1000. Is this at the peak or trough of your week? Any benefits of running over 1000?

Trough. I think that I am stronger, more muscular, and have more stamina above 1000. Is that real or is it my imagination? I am convinced that it is real, but I could be wrong.

I notice that I feel better since my dose was raised from .45 to .48-.50. In the absence of bloodwork- not scheduled till April - how would I now there was a problem? What side effects would occur? Everything feels great, sex life better than 20 years ago. Not huge muscle gains, but slow steady progress there.Dropping fat and definition seems to be the biggest change. If I nudge the dose to see if I improve, what side effects could I expect?

With a move that small, I wouldn't expect any side effect. I make adjustments and get labs every 6 months, I do donate blood regularly though.

So, I've been on trt for 5 1/2 months and it's been great. I read Nelson's what to expect thread and he said somewhere around 5 months or so muscle mass and strength would change, The past month I've noticed a big jump in muscle, especially arms and lats. It's almost like something has kicked in. Not complaining by any means, just curious as to how long this can continue. It just freaks me out that, despite a lifetime of working out, I'm starting to look better than in 25 years. No dietary changes, always have eaten clean, just vitamin D3 and fish oil.

I'm wondering if other older guys have experienced similar progress. I really can't train legs with any intensity due to surgeries on knee, hip replacement, and probably will need the other done soon, just air dyne sprints every other day. I can only imagine how it would be if I could do squats. As, far as I can tell, only Vince and Virginian are my age or older.

Hard to accept this much progress at times.Quality problem I guess, I'm curious about how other guys are adjusting and what I might do physically and emotionally to Keep this momentum going.

I've been on TRT for 2 years now and I just added N.O. stack, starting making good gain again. Then I added whey isolate and my workouts really took off. :)

Vince: What kind of whey are you using? It's about time for me to buy more.
MM: glad to hear improvements have kicked in. I'm on month 3 of T and Nandrolone and still waiting for something to happen, besides an increase in sex drive, which for me has been a negative not a positive.

I use one scoop of opportuniteas grass-fed whey isolate and one scoop of chocolate coconut primal fuel replacement with whey isolate.

I noticed increased energy right away. Sex drive was a shocker, noticed in the first month. Something of an issue as my wife has been struggling to keep up. Very fortunate that her sex drive is high. It would be very difficult if I didn't have a willing partner being on this stuff. Libido of a 20 something just doesn't equate with being in your 60's.

Keep working out and working out hard. I notice that I recovery much faster and can workout at greater intensity. Muscles pump up as they haven't for years.

What's your dosing protocol linter? And, what is nandrolone?

Keep working. Muscle gains will come in the next 3 months.

thanks, vince.

mm: i take 60mg T twice weekly. Nandrolone is an anabolic steroid i'm taking to try to combat a muscle wasting disease i have. I take the T not for low T levels but to balance out the effects of the Nandralone.
i try to workout hard but, like today, afterwards, my arms and hands start to shake so violently that I can't text and this typing here is a real PIA. this is new for me, so I hope it doesn't portend more bad f'ing news.
onward!

When I get done working out, my hands also shake. Fatigue and low blood sugar are the most likely culprits.

What kind of disease if you don't mind me asking? Your doctors should be able to give you some ideas of what to expect for exercise, especially the one prescribing the steroids. You may need to be more gradual in your building up the pace and intensity of the workouts. You're using resistance bands and this is not overly unusual, as the tension is constant when working out, different from what you get from weights. More muscle focused and less joint/structural feeling. Also can be a little harder to monitor progress. Recording your workouts and how you feel after, paying attention to how soon you're back to normal, recovery time etc. may help you gauge progress.

Be patient. I'm finding that trt is not magic in and of itself. It enhances work and diet for sure.

Hope you get to where you want to be. Keep us posted, old guys shouldn't be a dying breed!
