Glucosamine - my devastating side effects.

Another Great Day

Active Member
Over the past 9 months have experienced an increase in bi-lateral foot pain, neck pain, and overall body aches. My level of motivation and drive had been declining along with some "brain fog", which I define as very short-term memory loss.

I am an overly energetic Type A++ personality type. It has become much more difficult to begin my morning to due the increased aches and pains. My rational was that these issues are due to being over sixty years of age and having osteoarthritis.
To combat these aches I have taken NSAIDS, and acetaminophen. They did not really reduce the aches and pains.

A couple weeks ago, due to the bi-lateral foot pain, I began to think that I may have the onset of an autoimmune disease, possibly rheumatoid arthritis.

About 10 years ago my orthopedist suggested glucosamine to me and since then I have faithfully taken it twice per day.

Upon a lengthy search I found two disturbing "facts". 1. Glucosamine may cause joint and muscle pain 2. Glucosamine may also increase glaucoma risk. Therefore, it shouldn't be taken by those at risk of developing glaucoma, including those with a family history of glaucoma, people ages 60 or older, and those who have diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure ( 31 ).Dec 8, 2021.

Two weeks ago I stopped the glucosamine and within 5 days ALL of the above mentioned symptoms were 100% gone!

I did research in the past and continued to take glucosamine because it was supposed to , "help with joint pain".

Maybe this is an isolated case, and possibly I am the anomaly that experienced these devastating side effects but it disturbs me to think about others that may possibly have the same type of symptoms and "think" that glucosamine is helping them.

In general, low level allergies can cause your symptoms . I had similar issues with whey protein. I think chondroitin is sourced from shellfish so if glucosamine is the same way, then perhaps that is what is going on. Or there could be something in the binders and fillers. There is always someone who will have an issue with something. I'm glad that you're feeling better.
