Shbg values

Hello everyone. I was thinking about how testosterone levels are lower among all age groups for reasons that are difficult to explain and it got me to thinking about shbg. Are shbg values skewed high or low for unknown reasons because the top or bottom of the range can be problematic for some. Or are they just decided genetically.
Also what is the ideal value. I assume mid range but I don't know. Thoughts?

The idea value is unique to everyone, impossible to answer. There is thought to be a variability is the stickiness of SHBG from person to person, grabbing ahold more or less of your testosterone.

My SHBG is 16 and I respond fast to TRT, muscles are showing fast growth with little effort.

Thanks I guess there are pretty good explanations about the behavior of shbg. I was reading the other thread about shbg and it answered some of my questions, kinda dumb to post another thread that overlaps that discussion.
You have a favorable free t for muscle growth it sounds like . I don't see mine as problematic and it is usually 39-43 or thereabouts.

39-43 typically results in much less Free Estrogen and there in lies the part that of being less problematic for you. 10-20 points higher and you'd have a Free T problem.

I found this article interesting on SHBG where it talks about circulating levels of SHBG by age category plus a multivariate table based on BMI, smoking, waist, and physical activity.

It also references TT, BT, DHEA-S and E2.

European Journal of Endocrinology (2003) 149 583–589 ISSN 0804-4643

Endogenous sex hormones in men aged 40–80 years
Age:
TT, BT and DHEA-S showed a decline with age. BT declined in a more pronounced way (0.7%/year) than the TT serum level (0.4%). The annual reduction in DHEA-S was 1.2%. Serum SHBG concentrations showed an increase with age of 0.8%/year and E2 did not change with age (Table 1). After adjustment for BMI, current smoking, physical activity and alcohol intake the rates of decline of TT, BT and DHEA-S were 0.2, 0.7 and 1.2%/year. The annual decline rate of TT attenuated from 0.4 to 0.2%/year.
After adjustment SHBG showed an increase of 1.1%/year (Table 2).

Lifestyle factors:
After adjustment for age, current smoking, BMI and physical activity, participants with the highest alcohol intake (.40 g/day) were found to have lower TT and SHBG levels. Increases of DHEA-S levels were associated with higher alcohol intake (Ptrend , 0.001). Current smokers were found to have higher TT and SHBG levels, after adjusting for age, BMI, alcohol intake and physical activity. After adjustment for age, current smoking, alcohol intake and physical activity a significant inverse linear trend was found for TT, BT, SHBG and DHEA-S in association with BMI and waist circumference categories. A direct association was found for E2 levels and BMI and waist circumference. Increases of TT, BT and SHBG levels were associated with a higher score on the physical activity questionnaire (Table 2).

Table 1 in the attached link represents circulating SHBG levels by age category:

Table 2 in the attached link represents multivariate adjusted mean levels of TT, BT, SHBG, DHEA-S and E2 by category of age, smoking, BMI, waist and physical activity.

Not sure why having higher SHBG would be problematic ( having it too low would). Your doctor would just adjust your T dose to overcome that barrier. I always had SHBG in the high 70s but now my current free T (direct) is 29 (6.6-18.1). It took a few months to tweak my T and other things to get there but I now feel great. My T is > 1500. My doctor and I focus in free T not on total T.

You see why high SHBG is a problem...don't say it isn't it and that low is bad. You see your TT...>1500...lol...see what you have to do to get Free T.

I started with my SHBG at 75. I was prescribed 160mg TC and 1000iu HCG every 3.5 days.

After 3 months on that protocol, my SHBG came down to around 63.

TT was 1000+ FT around 27.

So for me, the lager T dose did very little to move my SHBG. Everyone is diffent.

It wasn't that difficult to get to the desired free T level. Not sure what you mean when you say : " see what you had to do" as it it was some impossible task. It was really easy.
