Prostate-PSA level and Proviron- Concerns

Back in December of 17 mt PSA level was 1.16. I went back a few weeks ago and was tested again and its at 2.21 and was told to stop taking test and come back in 6 weeks for another check. What I didnt tell my urologist at the time is I was on 50mg of Proviron a day as well. This leads me to my question and that is can Proviron effect my PSA levels to make it jump 1 point? I have been off the proviron for a few weeks now and go back on the 30th for another test. I never stopped taking test at 100mg a week as when I come off test I get very tired and weepy etc. I am open to hearing thoughts on this please.

Your doctor seems overly anxious over what might be a temporary spike in PSA which happens all the time, did you have sex prior to the the PSA labs?

I have no ideal regarding the Proviron can raise PSA or not, but by not telling your doctor you're could be putting yourself through unnecessary suffering.

Well I didn't tell him up front because of what it was. I did tell him after the results and he is very by the book and said its an illegal drug and I shouldnt be taking it and he had never heard of it until I told him about it. I am hoping the levels go back down or very least stay the same. Thanks for the reply!!!

You didn't mention your age.

My urologist has said sex will not significantly raise PSA (0.1 or 0.2). But anal sex can raise it a lot.

If PSA goes up again you should consider stopping test. And I wouldn't hide details from the doctor.

On a side note, I've had big jumps in my PSA. 10 years ago my PSA went from 1.2 to 1.5, then 1.5 to 1.7, then 1.7 to 5.1. Had a biopsy and turned out to be prostatitis. I was also 33 years old. A high PSA at a young age is usually an indication of prostatitis.

A heavy course of antibiotics brought it down to 0.9. It has remained .9 ever since. Low dose antibiotics often won't rid prostatitis.

I am 48 yrs old. I’m hoping it was a fluke and being off for 6 weeks will lower it back down. I guess if it’s not down I will have to cut the test out.

I would worry more about it going up. If it stays the same while on test I would retest in 4 weeks. You can get a referral online and test it yourself for almost nothing.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) can increase PSA. The causes of BPH is not well understood. One theory is that higher proportion of estrogen within the prostate promotes prostate growth.

Another theory is that elevated DHT encourages prostate growth. So could Proviron cause prostate growth/higher PSA, maybe. But might be a good idea to drop Proviron now.

Either way follow the advice of your doc.

You will be tested in the morning:)
BTW I just had blood drawn this AM to see where my PSA is currently at. Will be interesting to see if I need to take the next step:)

estrogen could have an impact on prostate but make no mistake, its DHT that really increases the sizemof your prostate.
how do we know this? Both finasteride and Durtasteride nlock the conversion of testosterone to DHT and both drugs SHRINK the prostate. both drugs can increase estrogen but yet they still shrink the prostate.
