I've always had much better results with free weights. Never hurts to mix up the routine every once in awhile and use some machines since usually you can pound out some much heavier reps.
I am just 7 months into weights. I started with machines and after 5 months started to mix in free weights. I think I like the machine and cable systems better. I feel safer on them, can move through them faster, and for me I get better results.
I have always used Free weights, although some machines are of great benefit, such at Lat Machine press downs, calf machines, leg press, leg curls, leg extensions, hack squat
.
so I guess for me, a combination of both.
