As most of us know, our beloved Delatestryl has its days numbered. I think production stopped, after 68 years, in April. I started T very recently and I'm due to run out of my first bottle on June 8, and had hoped the pharmacist would save me a bottle. I contacted him today telling him the sad story and he said "No way, you're mistaken". He then looked it up and was shocked to see that it was true and that he only had ONE bottle left at his store, and NONE in their franchise system. And worse was that there is no generic Hikma replacement that he knows of. He won't give me the sole bottle because he's only allowed to disburse it closer to my end supply date. But he said that he could release it if he got a note from my endo. So I phone the endo, of course I don't get him, but I get his trusted assistant. I tell her the sad story and what do you think she says? You guessed it . . . "No way, you're mistaken". Geez . . .
So is anybody aware of this? Is somebody paying attention to this shortage, or will patients just find out about it when they visit the pharmacy for a renewal? Does Health Canada look into replacements? I think I'll phone Hikma on Monday - hopefully they know about it!
As an aside, my pharmacist and I were trying to determine the end date of my existing supply. I contend that there's always some T that's left in the needle and thus wasted. The pharmacist disagrees and says that if, for example, I needed 100mg a week, that the 5ml 1000mg bottle should give me exactly 10 doses. Is that true, are you guys hitting 10 pins right on, or do you fall short of that? Maybe there's a bit extra in the bottle to compensate? Hmmm . . .
