* As a clinician-scientist, Dr Antonio combines specialist patient care with research investigating steroid hormone–binding protein interactions and their implications for improving the diagnosis and personalized management of endocrine disorders.
* As an endocrinologist and clinician-scientist, I combine patient care with clinically oriented research, with a focus on andrology, reproductive endocrinology and steroid hormones. More specifically, I do research on steroid hormone-binding protein interactions and clinical implications of looking at the total versus the free fraction, such as in the case of total testosterone, SHBG and free testosterone.

We do it big here at Nelson's stomping ground!
Dr. Leen Antonio (UZ Leuven)!
She has collaborated with the heavyweights in the field Dr. Bhasin and Dr. Jasuja (Brigham and Women's Hospital)), Dr. Fiers and team (UZ Ghent) on research related to free testosterone.

Measurement and reporting of clinical testosterone diagnostics: a European survey (2023)
*Three fractions circulate in plasma: the unbound (free) fraction, the fraction bound to specific binding proteins, such as sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and vitamin D binding protein (DBP); and the albumin-bound fraction
*The equilibrium state between these fractions is characterized not only by total hormone concentration but also by BP concentration and binding affinities for their respective metabolites1
*The use of calculators, relying on...

* With CLASH-free, we will improve the clinical applicability of free steroid hormone concentrations in patients with specific conditions by using state-of-the-art methods.
* Formulas to estimate free steroid hormone concentrations are used instead, but their applicability in many clinical conditions is questionable, so is the correctness of therapeutic actions based on these results.
* We will improve current formulas to better estimate free hormone levels.

Research Portal - The Changing Landscape in the Assessment of Steroid Hormone concentrations: is it time to let them free? (CLASH-free)
Steroid hormones such as testosterone or vitamin D are vital forhuman physiology. In circulation, steroid hormones bind to specificbinding proteins and albumin, with only a small fraction circulatingfreely. The ‘free hormone hypothesis’ suggests that this free fractionis responsible for...

* Future research in the field of T assessment should prioritize multicenter validation of cFT against ED measurements of free T in diverse populations to confirm cFT as a robust and clinically accessible tool (see Outstanding questions).
* Additionally, the growing availability of mFT data after ED offers an opportunity to revise currently available cFT algorithms (such as the Vermeulen equation) (Box 1). By recalibrating these formulas against direct free T measurements, derived free T values will become more accurate, bringing calculated...
