A very efficient training method to maximize Hypertrophy

Borge Fagerli is a super smart, well-read trainer that takes a very scientific approach to his methods. I had the pleasure of working with Borge many years ago.

He has developed what he calls "Myo-Reps" that is geared to optimize muscle growth in as efficient manner as possible. For those that have studied many training methodologies - you might recognize some similarities with Doggcrapp (DC) Training, HST (hypertrophy-specific training), and Cluster Training, and Rest/Pause training.

But I think he's taken things to the next level, and i've seen great success with it. A couple things I really like:

1. I'm able to make great progress while keeping weights lighter! Much more 'friendly' on my 47-year-old tendons, etc. I tend to get medial epicondylitis if I go too heavy on things like weighted pull-ups or weighted dips, etc, so lighter weights while maintaining time under tension and stress on the muscles is a life saver.

2. His "system" is pretty much self-regulating. Since you use RPE and take sets to "near failure" it's helped me to avoid over-training. Of course, you can still periodize your workouts/phases with number of total reps or % of 1RM you start with in the initial set.

Anyway - if anyone likes to Geek Out on training systems - it's worth a read. (Oh and he's Norwegian - so you have to look for his English articles because Google Translate is awkward..haha).

HERE's the link to read about it:

<clears throat> medial epicondylitis...I got that with tennis elbow, as if one side of the elbow wasn't enough. Both arms to boot. Just had elbow surgery 4 weeks ago. Still hurts but getting better.

I feel like as I get older and working around exercises due to tendons, joints, etc I will be in a body cast before I am dead still trying to lift weights

Oh wow - both sides sounds brutal. For some reason golfer's elbow is the one I frequently get and I notice it more with heavy pulling movements.

Hope your surgery really helps.

I am 50 and do not have any of this signs and I lift heavy, but not longer than 25 minutes per workout. I also stretch, but a day after workout or when ever I feel I have to stretch. Never right after workout.

Fireproof,

I tried the workout yesterday with Bi's and calves. First time in a looooong time my calves have been sore. Bi's not sore but wow did I get a crazy pump. Will give this type of workout a go for 6 weeks and let you know how it goes.

I always liked high volume personally, when I worked on a paint line in the past constantly picking stuff up from the ground and hanging it over head with short rest intervals some parts were over 100lbs and would team lift the bigger ones but doing that for 8-12 hours a day everyone put on some solid lean mass and became stronger.

Very cool. Keep me posted on how you like it.

And for calves especially - I find a big squeeze and pause at the top, followed by slow 2-3 second eccentric to work very well.
