Not all drinks carry the same risk. A major new study presented at the American College of Cardiology 2026 Scientific Session analyzed data from 340,924 UK adults followed for over 13 years and found that the type of alcohol you drink matters as much as the amount. Moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death. But even low intake of beer, cider, or spirits was linked to a 9% higher risk of dying from heart disease.
What you will learn in this article:
1. How wine, beer, and spirits differ in cardiovascular and mortality risk
2. The biological mechanisms: polyphenols, uric acid, and ethanol concentration
3. Why drinking timing (with meals vs. before meals) changes your risk
4. The confounding factor most news articles ignore
5. What this means for men on TRT and hormone optimization
