Wanted: Younger Blood Doners

According to a recent article, nearly 60% of blood donations in the United States come from people over the age of 40, and nearly 45% of all donations come from people older than 50. Fewer than 10% of blood donations come from people ages 23-29, with a little more than 12% from people in their 30s.

  • "Many regular donors are aging out of the donor pool, experts say.
  • There is one hopeful statistic: kids in the youngest age groups, 16-22, now account for about 20% of all donations.

That is interesting. I would have figured all these socially active hipsters would be donating so they could tweet about how they are saving lives. I wonder if those numbers are due to aging males being on TRT or having too much iron and thus donating out of medical need (I am in that group). Interesting about the 16 to 22 year olds - wonder why.
