Steven K. Grinspoon, MD, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, discusses the molecular and clinical implications of visceral adipose tissue accumulation in lipodystrophy.
In his presentation, Grinspoon covered HIV lipodystrophy, which occurs in about 25% of HIV-infected patients. Initially, researchers focused on the drugs to treat the condition but have moved on to focusing on the HIV itself.
Grinspoon also touches on new treatment strategies that would focus on the development of a growth-hormone releasing hormone to selectively reduce visceral fat in HIV lipodystrophy.
