TRT Side Effect Management: Acne

When researching TRT, people frequently ask: “Does TRT cause acne?” Dr. Justin Saya from Defy Medical talks about this side effect; what causes acne, and how to effectively manage it, in this helpful video.

Dr. Saya explains that acne is a side effect that is commonly encountered with testosterone replacement, in both male and female patients. This is caused because androgen can activate oil glands, causing the skin to produce more oil. Although natural oils produced in the skin can help keep you looking young and healthy, too much of it can build up to cause acne.

TRT patients who are at the greatest risk for this side effect are usually those who struggled with acne as teenagers or young adults. Sometimes, acne appears in patients whose levels of testosterone are allowed to become too high. Diligent follow-up appointments are necessary for preventing and treating side effects such as acne. When the doctor and patient work together, it is much easier to maximize the benefits of TRT, while minimizing side effects.
