Doctor gave me 10mL bottle because I'll be traveling for a while and won't be able to refill the 1mL bottles I usually get with my rx. 10mL will last for several months with the amount I do. Pharmacist told me to discard the bottle after 28 days once the top is pierced. What's the thinking behind this? Obviously the drug won't spontaneously go bad in 28 days.

Thats why you really can't get 10mL's any more, they think it expires before you can use it all and you're right, there's no worries that anything will go bad during your use of the 10mL.

That is the new rules that some are following regarding bottle usage with the idea being that using the bottle for only 28 days makes it less likely to contaminate the contents inside the bottle. I don't know if this is a valid concern or a money grab for pharmacies, Dr, drug companies. Sad that we have to questions that stuff. Do your best to use a small gauge needle so as to not tear up the rubber seal, sterilize the rubber stopper really well, and do your best to avoid contamination of the inside of the bottle. I only use the bottle for 2 months and then throw it out. Figured that was a good compromise.

That's a waste but it's you're money I suppose.

This is what the pharmacists is referring to - see link, section 5.

28 days seem too short to me also, but what do I know. Not all places seem to follow this rule and even my own Dr. was not that concerned about using the vial past the 28 days mark, but he did comment not to pinch pennies on injectables. On my current protocol, there is not much left after 2 months, but at every three days, that is about 20 punctures over the two month period, each with a needle that has been exposed to air so is not sterile. In addition, I think most people, including myself inject air into the vial to aid in the withdrawal of the Test, and this air is not sterile either. So 20 times I inject non-sterile air into the vial. I also read that the preservative in the vial is mostly there to stop spoilage not to act as a disinfectant to kill introduced bacteria. I don't have a link for that and it may have been on a forum so take it with a grain of salt. Maybe someone knows more about the preservative. YMMV. Just take good precautions and be safe.
