Stop the Thyroid Madness

Nelson,

I have been following my mothers hypothyroidism for many years. She has seen many endocrinologists, some of which are the "best" in the field. Recently, her Free-t4 was high and her Free-t3 was low. Her endocrinologist; therefore, lowered her dose of Synthroid. It boggles my mind that her doctor thinks that by decreasing her dosage, her problem will be solved. He was correct that the lowered dosage resulted in her Free-t4 normalizing. But, this is going to result in her Free-t3, which is already low, to fall further out of range. Therefore, you'd figure that he would also check her Free-t3 since it was out of range in her last blood-work. Correct? I was blown away when she told me they did not test her Free-t3, but only Tsh and Free-t4. Logically, it seems that the only way to solve her problem would be to either use separate t-4 and t-3 or a combination of the two such as Armour thyroid.

Many Enod's are just not trained in Thyroid disordered regardless what they tell you.

My experience is that you need to find a "Thyroid Specialist" which may still be a Endo but one solely focused on this gland.

Not evaluating FT3 nor RT3 nor antibodies is just insane.

I have a decent endo that kinda lets me guide the way and i got alot of info from the stop the thyroid madness group. my challange is when i go to my primary and they seem my low TSH as a result of being on thyroid meds..they freak out and say i am on too much... last check with 3.5 grains of nature-throid and 7.5mcg T3 my t4 was still low so i talked the dr into adding some T4.. in the past i had a high Reverse T3 and that seems to have been helped with HC and keeping free T3 #'s up.
oddly my levels where "normal" before thyorid...(all on the low end of normal) but i would get very low body temp drops like down to 95.4 and freezing inside. and sick wiht alot of lung infections.. since thyroid and HC i am running a much better body temp and not as many (knock on wood) infections.

Gene,

You would be surprised at how many mainstream doctors/endocrinologists only test Tsh and Free-t4. My Endo at the University of Michigan did the same nonsense with me. Plus, she refused to address MANY hypo symptom's I was experiencing after she initially took me off Armour and switched me to Synthroid. Finally, I had to take it back into my own hands, which is ridiculous but at least I am feeling good again, now that I am back on Armour. A friend of mine that works in a compounding lab told me that many longevity doctors that use her lab are switching from Armour to Naturethroid. Do you or any other members have any experience with Naturethroid or know why it is preferred in some cases? One point she made was that it was slower-releasing, thus provided more stable blood-levels throughout the day.

Brooksky,

I use 3.0 grain/day; which is a significant amount of thyroid. What blood tests has your doctor performed?
Dave
i was on 3.5 grains of nature-throid and my last tests free t4 was still low.. 9 (dr has run alot of tests.. she usually does my thryoid panel every 6 to 8 weeks to see as we are trying to get better numbers. she does free t3 free t4 tsh a few times we have run a reverse t3 last time that was not an issue (although it had been in the past)

My doc just told me my thyroid is hypo and based on my symptoms he wants me on a low dose of Naturethroid. I will make sure to respond back with my thoughts on Naturethroid after I have taken it for a while.
