If you wake up with morning wood does it mean your body made testosterone that night during rem sleep? I heard that or read it somewhere and wondered what the boards opinion is on this. How would exogenous T and hcg affect this ?

According to a study by the Society for Endocrinology, it could actually be that as certain parts of the brain shut down during REM sleep, his brain is no longer keeping his penis in check. Whereas normally the brain is regulating the penis and making sure erections only occur when needed, during REM the penis is free to do whatever it wants. And what it wants to do is get hard.

In addition to Cosmo reference;

On average, a healthy man has three to five erections during a full night's sleep, with each erection lasting 25-35 minutes. It's common for men to wake up with an erection, informally called a "morning glory". This is in fact the last in the series of night-time erections. The cause of night-time erections isn't fully understood. However, studies suggest they are closely associated with the phase of sleep known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. This is when dreaming is most common. Whatever their cause, most doctors agree that night-time erections are a sign that everything is in working order.

It's also been suggested that NPT is triggered by the release of nitric oxide (NO). NO is released by cells that line the inside of blood vessels which then diffuses into smooth muscle, causing it to relax. This also causes blood vessels to dilate, hence increasing blood flow to the penis and voila, an erection. It's thought that increased activity of part of the pons during REM sleep triggers a cascade of events that ultimately lead to NO release by nerve fibers. This is also regulated by androgens such as testosterone.
