Vitamin D Supplementation and the Human Transcriptome

Vitamin D supplementation has been the focus of a great deal of research with results consistently showing the importance of supplementing it when levels are subpar. In a highly technical study, it was recently shown - again - that the Vitamin D Receptor is present in a wide variety of cells and acts as a transcription factor. Activation of the Vitamin D Receptor is estimated to regulate up to 55 of the human genome.

  • In this study, a total of 99 genes (p≤0.05, log2 fold change ≥|0.2|) were found to be regulated by Vitamin D Receptor, of which 72 have not been published before as influenced by Vitamin D. These genes were particularly involved in the interleukin signaling pathway, oxidative stress response, apoptosis signaling pathway and gonadotropin releasing hormone receptor pathway.
