Vitamin D and Insulin Resistance

Researchers recently conducted a study to determine the clinical utility in measuring Vitamin D serum levels - along with other traditional risk-factor measurements - in the diagnosis of insulin resistance. Additionally, they worked to estimate the optimal D levels associated with normal glucose and insulin homeostasis.

  • A cross-sectional analysis of 6,868 adults without diagnosed diabetes formed the sample group.
  • Using logistic regression, two risk models were developed to estimate the risk of insulin resistance.
    • Model One included established risk factors
    • Model Two additionally included serum levels of Vitamin D.
  • Model Two, the model including Vitamin D levels, marginally improved detection of insulin resistance. Adding Vitamin D levels to the calculation would identify an additional two to four cases per1,000 people.
  • Model Two also determined that the lower Vitamin D threshold was estimated at 60 nmol/L.
It should be noted that the threshold differed by ethnicity and more testing is called for.

Understanding Your Hormones

Estradiol (E2)

A form of estrogen produced from testosterone. Important for bone health, mood, and libido. Too high can cause side effects; too low can affect well-being.

DHT

Dihydrotestosterone is a potent androgen derived from testosterone. Affects hair growth, prostate health, and masculinization effects.

Free Testosterone

The biologically active form of testosterone not bound to proteins. Directly available for cellular uptake and biological effects.
