Reversing the Effects of Aging -- In Rats

A new study of aged rats examined if strength training and testosterone propionate (10 mg/kg w) reversed the effects of aging in rats. They examined muscle size and size of the myelin sheath in the peripheral nervous system. In both cases more is better. Rats were divided into several groups. Some got strength training, some got testosterone, some lucky rats got both, and some lazy rats got neither. You may ask, how do you strength train a rat? In this case you put them in a weighted vest and make them climb a ladder. Not surprisingly, testosterone and weight training increased muscle size, it also increased nerve fiber size by increasing the myelin sheath.
The take away is that resistance training and testosterone not only reverses the muscle wasting that comes with aging, it also reverses the effects of aging on the peripheral nervous system. This improvement came with training and testosterone individually, and also with both together.

Understanding Your Hormones

Estradiol (E2)

A form of estrogen produced from testosterone. Important for bone health, mood, and libido. Too high can cause side effects; too low can affect well-being.

DHT

Dihydrotestosterone is a potent androgen derived from testosterone. Affects hair growth, prostate health, and masculinization effects.

Free Testosterone

The biologically active form of testosterone not bound to proteins. Directly available for cellular uptake and biological effects.
