Pearls and Perspectives is a new podcast from Urology Times®, hosted by board-certified urologist Amy Pearlman, MD. This series explores the latest in urologic care, men’s health, and emerging innovations—all through a practical, patient-focused lens.

In this episode, Pearlman, co-founder of Prime Institute, discusses premature ejaculation (PE) with Brian L. Steixner, MD, a board-certified urologist at AtlantiCare in Linwood, New Jersey. Steixner is also the co-founder and chief executive of Popstar Labs, a urologist-founded brand focused on improving sexual health and wellness.

Throughout the episode, Pearlman and Steixner touch on the prevalence of PE and the lack of effective solutions. Steixner explains that PE is the number 1 sexual medicine complaint among men. Pearlman and Steixner also reflect on the lack of education on PE during training as well the prevalence of misconceptions surrounding the condition. They detail the complexities of defining PE, noting 4 types: primary, secondary, variable, and perceived. In addition, they also offer insights on treatment options such as sex therapy, pelvic floor physical therapy, and delay sprays. Regarding the latter, Steixner described Popstar's 10% lidocaine spray, which is applied to the head, frenulum, and shaft for maximum absorption. Steixner also outlined the spray's development and best practices for use. According to Steixner, benefits of the delay spray include increased lasting time, improved partner satisfaction, and the absence of a medicinal taste or smell.

Steixner also offered advice to urologists looking to create innovations in the space, “As physicians, we are educated, we are intelligent, and we're in tune to what patients need. When you're in tune to what patients need, you're being served opportunities to help first.”
