BPH Treatments for Better Erectile Function

Today we are joined by Dr. Joel Hillelsohn, a board-certified urologist at New York University Medical Center. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Hillelsohn joins us to discuss the BPH treatment options and which ones are best suited to facilitate good erectile function.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition affecting many men as they age, causing urinary symptoms and potentially impacting sexual function. While medications like Flomax and finasteride are often prescribed as initial treatments, they can have side effects such as retrograde ejaculation or decreased libido.

However, in recent years, medical advancements have introduced new minimally invasive procedures for treating BPH with minimal risk to sexual function. These alternatives offer hope for men concerned about preserving their sexual health while addressing urinary issues.

Additionally, medications like daily low-dose Cialis can sometimes address both BPH and erectile dysfunction simultaneously. It's crucial for patients to discuss all available options with their urologist, as treatments continue to evolve. Men experiencing increased urination frequency or nighttime waking should seek evaluation, as early intervention can prevent long-term bladder changes and improve overall quality of life.

It doesn't sound like any of the "treatments" remove the cause. In episode 299 of his podcast, Dr. Gundry says that there is emerging evidence that BPH is caused by a bacterial infection that stems from intestinal permeability (AKA "leaky gut") and that he fixed his own BPH by fixing leaky gut. This seems to argue for not only fixing/avoiding leaky gut, but some form of antibiotics and immune system support (e.g. liposomal vitamin C) as a first line of prevention and treatment.

Understanding Your Hormones

Estradiol (E2)

A form of estrogen produced from testosterone. Important for bone health, mood, and libido. Too high can cause side effects; too low can affect well-being.
