For anyone who is interested in getting their body fat composition tested via Bod Pod analysis in the NY City metro area, here are a couple of leads.

I understand that this device is highly reliable and is actually used at the NFL Combine for body comp testing:

Just a quick follow up and a word about Tanita "bathroom" scale / body comp accuracy. Got my Bod Pod test done yesterday at St. Lukes Med Cntr. Results were 14.4 % Went home and used my very old Tanita body comp scale to take a measurement .....result in "normal" mode.......14.5% I was pleasantly surprised and somewhat shocked at the accuracy. Thought this might be of interest to those who use Tanita home body comp scales and wondering about the accuracy.

The BOD POD is an Air Displacement Plethysmograph (ADP) that uses whole body
densitometry to determine body composition (fat vs. lean). Similar in principle to underwater weighing, the BOD POD measures body mass (weight) using a very precise scale, and volume by sitting inside the BOD POD. Body density can then be calculated:

Density = Mass/Volume

Once the overall density of the body is determined, the relative proportions of body fat and lean body mass are calculated. The BOD POD differs from underwater weighing in that the BOD POD uses air instead of water to measure body volume, based on the physical relationship between pressure and volume. This relationship allows for the derivation of an unknown volume by directly measuring pressure.

During a measurement, the BOD POD produces very small volume changes inside the chamber and measures the pressure response to these small volume
changes. To accomplish this, the interior volume of the empty BOD POD chamber is first determined, then the volume when the subject is seated inside the BOD POD is also determined.

By subtraction, the subject's volume is obtained. For example, if the interior air volume of the empty chamber is 400 liters, volume of the chamber is reduced to 350 liters with the subject inside, then the body volume of the subject is 50 liters.

The main reason (and why DXA is considered the gold standard) is that DXA is the most accurate measurement of body composition, offers the best precision between tests, and uses a three-compartment model vs two.

Three compartment model means you get a measurement of not only your lean and fat mass (the two compartment model), but also your bone mass (very important for knowing your risk of osteoporosis, osteopenia, and other low bone mass issues).
A DEXA scan also shows you the fat and lean mass distribution throughout your entire body! This means you can see how each region of your body compares to each other


Other popular methods using the two-compartment model like Hydrostatic Weighing, Bod Pod, and Calipers only measure fat and fat-free mass and can't report your fat and lean mass distribution.
These methods are also calculated measurements of body fat, influenced by uncontrollable environmental variables, human error, less precision, and a high margin of error.
