Automated 30-minute blood pressure monitoring in the primary care setting may be an effective strategy for addressing suspected white-coat hypertension, which is a widely recognized contributor to overdiagnosis of hypertension and overtreatment, researchers say.

Among 201 patients enrolled in the prospective, cross-sectional, single-center study -- who, for various reasons, underwent office blood pressure readings over 30 minutes (OBP30) -- mean systolic blood pressure readings averaged 23 mm Hg lower than single time point measurement. Mean diastolic readings were 11.6 mm Hg lower, according to Michiel Bos, MD, and Sylvia Buis, MD, of the primary healthcare center Gezondheidscentrum Ommoord, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
