Urolift Prostate procedure and TRT

Hello,
As the title says. Anyone on trt and had a prostate procedure? I’m 51, been on trt for almost 5yrs. Use tamsulosin(flomax) daily, .5cc of testosterone cypionate divided into 2 doses weekly. My doc told me that I’m a good candidate for the Urolift procedure and that about 80% of men are able to stop the flomax. I stopped the test for almost 3 months to see if that would help( it did not) only resulted in a prostatitis. I typically wake 3-4 times nightly, and have the urge to go around every hour/ hour and a half. But my anxiety is very high about having a procedure at my age as it seems the avg age for a operation is around age 65? So has anyone on trt had a prostate procedure and stayed on trt? If so what did you have? How was recovery? Your age? A lot of my post is fueled by anxiety and just looking for some reassurance that I’m not alone….

FYI, a friend of mine had the urolift procedure 3 years ago, and it failed miserably. he is now scheduled for TURP to fix the failure of urolift. Urolift made things worse for him. He was up more at night, he needed to wear diapers for 3 years. His doctors wanted to “fix” his bladder by injection every three months. This may have been a failure by doctors to do the procedure correctly? Just make sure you look at ALL alternatives before taking the advice of one doctor. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.
set up Google alerts to send you daily alerts on keywords for all the different procedures. Do not take your doctors word for any procedure without doing your own extensive reasearch yourself. I am still researching for myself. I’m not sold on any of them yet. I have found the procedure with the least amount of “side effects” /“issues” would be Rezum, but my prostate is too large at this point in time. Just make sure the doctor you use is highly experienced in the procedure you choose.

I am on TRT since 2018, and had urology in 2020. No complications, wasn’t able to correlate any difference in terms of TRT.
The urolift procedure was not fun, went in through penis with only nitrous and a Valium. Needed catheter for an extra day, hard night, but results are good. At most get up only once, pee volume up, but you do it to prevent continued blockage as you age.
I’m 66 now. You need to trust your urologist, and their capabilities.

I had BHP so bad that it severely inhibited the urinary tract. I was getting up 4-7 times at night to pee. When I went to my Urology doctor, after I voided my bladder was still 90% full . The urine was backing up into my kidney and caused kidney damage. My eGrf was 28. I then had robotic prostate simple surgery. Not so simple. The robotic surgery drills 5 holes in your stomach area and removes part of the prostate around the urinary tract. It's a one day hospital stay. All works well now and urine is freely flowing. The sphincter muscles work perfectly. The problems I have are minor. I've have to do a lot of lower ab exercises to flatten my lower abs after their lousy closing of the surgery holes job. Also I do not have ejaculate when I cum. My kidney after 2 months has still not completely recovered.

I know they have been covered on this forum: Tulsa-pro and HOLEP would be my choices. I may be headed that way soon.

I have been on TRT for 6 years. I just had a Urolift 4 months ago. I had been on Flomax and Cialis for 4 years. I was under anesthesia for the procedure. Recovery was uncomfortable. It felt like my bladder was full all the time for a good week and I had to pee every hour while awake. I was peeing blood clots for a week. I almost had to go to the ER one time when a clot was too big to pass. Luckily I had disposable catheters at home and was able to cath it out. My local emergency room has a reputation for incompetence, so I'm glad I didn't have to go. My doc did give me Vicodin for the pain. It was effective and I switched over to motrin on day 3.

At this time, 4 months after the procedure I am probably getting as much benefit as I will. It has helped somewhat, but not enough for me to get off of the Flomax and Cialis. So I am very disappointed in that. I can pee better now, but I am quite sure that within a few years I will have to have something else done.

There has been no change in my sexual function. That all works as well as it did before the procedure.

Bottom line: The results are just OK. I'm underwhelmed. But I didn't get injured or impaired.

I will be 64 in November, and have been on TRT off and on for about 10 years. There was 2 years in those 10 that I was off TRT mostly due to a relocation and then trying to find a doctor that would prescribe the testosterone. 2 months ago I underwent the HOLEP procedure with a very reputable doctor who specialized in that procedure. My prostate was about 3x normal size, no cancer, just big. The procedure was outpatient, went home with a bag which they removed the next day at the follow up. I wore a diaper for about a week thereafter to accommodate dribbling and some post surgery bleeding. The recovery has been pretty straightforward without much side effects. They will want you to take it easy for about 6 weeks ... no heavy lifting, not a lot of sitting, etc. I went back to work after only a few days at home since I have a stand up desk and don't do a lot of sitting. Having to re-educate the pelvic floor muscles is probably the most important thing you can do in the recovery. The only big change is 70% of men lose the ability to ejaculate during orgasm, but you still have an orgasm. This has been my case and I don't find it an issue at all, it's just different.

From the research I did, if you have a large prostate the HOLEP is about the only way to go that makes any sense. The drugs are not a solution they just treat symptoms, and if your prostate is too big the Urolift will not work. I was also told that generally speaking the Urolift is a temporary solution at best as many men will have to have the procedure done every 5 years ... especially if your prostate is large and especially if you are on TRT. I didn't have this choice as I was told my prostate was too large to even consider Urolift.

I had my uroift at age 74, last year. A year into it now. Happy with it. Not sure I understand why you would stop the test. Urolift designates some MDs as "Centers of Excellence". They do addt'l training and have to perform minimum 60 a year and give before and after results. I'd look for one if your doc isn't one. Have you had your ultrasound and cystoscope?
