[TD="align: left"]Dear friends,

As 2013 came to a close, the yearlong attacks on the dietary supplement industry swelled into an all-out war. The largest media outlets in the country came after our industry in an extremely misguided and troubling manner, aiming to “take down” supplements and dissuade millions of American consumers from taking products that can benefit their health.

The story that made the biggest headlines at the end of the year was the editorial from medical professionals encouraging consumers to stop taking their vitamin and mineral supplements, which appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine. NPA came out strongly against the editorial, and conducted several high-profile interviews on the topic with outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN and many more, ensuring that consumers received both sides of the story.

In that same week, The New York Times published another editorial from Dr. Paul Offit, who this year embarked on a mission against dietary supplements. Dr. Offit's egregious statements could not be ignored, and NPA immediately issued a response. Dr. Offit clearly has no intention of giving up on is misguided crusade, and NPA will diligently continue to respond to his claims and work to correct his misinformed views.

At the end of December, we also saw concerning articles from USA TODAY and, yet again,The New York Times. These stories characterize the dietary supplement industry as nearly unregulated, and group in criminals with our legitimate and hardworking manufacturers. NPA has, and will continue to, reach out to our contacts at these and other publications to educate them on industry issues and encourage more accurate reporting.
