We all remember watching Rocky 4 for the first time. The discouraged Rocky Balboa is set to face the seemingly invincible Drago. Balboa's wife doesn't believe he can defeat the Ironman after Apollo Creed died by the hands of the Russian soldier. So instead of sulking in the wake of Drago's destruction, Rocky takes to the woods laced in snow and what followed was the greatest training montage in modern cinema. American film goers were enthralled with a fire to go outside and imitate just exactly what had taken place on screen. But what many found out and what we continue to find out after watching thousands of films or television programs that exhibit the best physiques ever, is that what motivates these men and women may not be what motivates us to train. Motivation is a word easier said than actually experiencing. Whether it is, fitness, employment or education staying motivated to progress or continue in whatever capacity is the hardest endeavor to pursue. What is it about staying motivated that presents difficulty? The answer is consistency through time. It is easy to start anything. Whether it be training, studying or project design, and beginnings are the easiest. But maintaining the same rate of progress over the period of time it takes to see results can discourage us. We want quick results and that is perfectly understandable, but results take time. Being motivated to stay the course and continue your progression throughout your routine takes unbelievable mental capacity and fortitude. How do we attain and sustain that mental fortitude? The answer is quite simple. Put things into perspective. First and foremost, every day we work towards a goal is a day of improving. Whether our ultimate results are months or years away, we can trust that each moment of progression is better than the last. So, while we may not be able to imitate the great Rocky Balboa, we can rest assure that with time and patience, we can become our own champion.
