psa level, my doc wont treat without consulting

I had my pre treatment labs done and my doc won't treat until I get a urology consultation. I'm almost 65 and my psa was 3.4. is this common

A high PSA can be a non-cancerous conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an infection.

For some men it is normal for PSA to increase as you get older due to reasons stated above.

Don't know how common it is, but the same thing happened to me. Although in my case my TRT doc made me get a urologist consult when my PSA rose above 4.0. In my experience urologists are very quick to suggest a biopsy - I elected to get a prostate MRI instead and that satisfied my TRT doc.

They can also produce false positive results.

Regardless of your PSA number, your doc should also be checking Free PSA which is a better indicator if there is cancer or not. A good PSA Free could eliminate the need for a biopsy.
