My name is walter. I'm 40. I workout 3 days a week in the gym and 4 days a week doing BJJ. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 3 years ago and I use a cpap. My machine goes from 4-20. My level is on 6 so it's mild.
In 2010 I had my total testosterone checked and it was at 619. All my other labs were normal within range.

In 2013 I got it checked again. This time my TT was 320. My vitamin D was low. So I begin taking 10,000 ius of vitamin D. In 2014 at a physical I got it checked again. This time it came back at 407. I upped the vitamin D by 5,000 ius.

Of of course the 2013 and 2014 were from different doctors and both said I'm within normal ranges. So this is why im looking elsewhere.
My thyroid and pituitary tests were normal. My iron was one point under normal ranges. It was a 59 on a scale of 60-?(I forget the upper limit)
so that's my story. Any questions please ask.

oh. I should add. I have no other symptoms of low t other than my recovery period after exercise is longer, but I susp that's a product of age and the amount of training.

Welcome to EM! Glad you joined!

If your iron serum was, or is low, then the chances of your thyroid function being "normal" is going to be slim. Labs like TSH, T3, and others might be falling into the area of "normal" on the reference range, and you might even see T3 in the upper part of the range when iron is low. If the doctor(s) are not running all the necessary labs, then this could be anything but "normal". If you have a chance and want to post your labs, we can provide some comments.

Walril, your labs kind of confirm what I was conveying in my previous post (regarding thyroid) ... If we go by your TSH, it's like real low. At first glance someone would figure your thyroid hormone levels must be great! Well, we look at your FT4 and it's at 20% of the reference range value. Of course most doctors will love the TSH score, and if the T4 falls somewhere between 0.8 and 1.8, life is good!!

Again, anything but "normal". With suboptimal T4 levels, one would wonder "WHY" isn't this prompting the pituitary to produce more TSH, which in turn would stimulate more thyroid hormone?? Could be a variety of reasons .. My "guess", going off of what I know about your iron situation, I'd probably think that your Free T3 is higher, but if you dig deeper, I would also guess that Reverse T3 is not in balance with the FT3 serum level. T3 NEEDS the adequate levels of iron to get into cells. If it's not there, T3 will build up (called pooling), T4 will compensate with converting to more RT3.

Your situation is just one more example of why doctors can't diagnose or treat the thyroid on just TSH, and TSH and T4 only. You will need Free T3, Reverse T3, TPO &TgAB Antibodies, and knowing the situation with the iron, it would be beneficial to see cortisol w/DHEA circadian profile, B12, D3 & magnesium (adrenals the more critical of them). I get a funny feeling the doctors you are working with will NOT be too thrilled to accommodate you on these extra labs. If they understood it they would already be running them ... This is where you will probably need to visit with a specialist that can help you get this figured out.

Specialist as in endo or a low t clinic?

Yeah, specialist as in clinic and/or A4M type mindset; someone who also really knows how to dial in the thyroid;a la Dr. Bruce Rind mindset ... Here's a fairly decent link from STTM.com on finding a physician ... http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/how-to-find-a-good-doc/

For discussion sake, we can always throw some thoughts on your labs here at EM. So if you're inclined to want to order some a la carte labs, say through discount labs (our sponsor), or somewhere else, we can always give you some thoughts and conversation on your presented labs, which could possibly help with future conversations with a new, or who knows maybe an existing physician.

Note: If they want to offer you the T3 Uptake and index lab, save your blood! These tests will NEVER get to the root of your problem, nor will they give you any true feedback on your actual T3 serum levels. Seeing more & more of these still popping up with members here. I'm just thinking if you bring any of this up with one of your current physicians, this "might" their come back solution to keep you pacified. Go with the labs I mentioned earlier, they are no BS, real time labs that matter to your current status!
