Abscess at Injection Site

As I write this I'm at JFK Hospital in Edison, New Jersey.

I just had an abscess drain from my left shoulder in the area where I inject.

It was a pretty bad abscess.

Any idea what could have caused this issue?

I've been on TRT for close to 3 years, no issues.

I'm a patient of Dr. Rand McClain.

I follow the same protocol every time I inject.

I inject .5 cc of 200 mg testosterone cypionate on Sundays and Thursdays, always alternating the location, with Sundays being left delt and Thursdays being right delt.

I feel like I got a idea of what I'm doing.

But this was a pretty scary situation.

Luckily, no other symptoms.

Waiting on the culture and labs on the fluid that was drained.

There's always a small chance of some bad bugs on the skin surviving the alcohol swabbing and being pushed in with the needle. I haven't had a problem in 2,000+ subQ injections, but I'm aware that it's possible.

What you need to be more sure of is that your testosterone has not become contaminated. Otherwise you could end up repeating this unfortunate experience. If there's not too much left in the vial then consider pitching it. Otherwise, I don't know how easy it would be to have somebody culture a sample for you.

Scary stuff - sorry to hear that happened to you.

Could you please describe your injection routine for us step by step?

For example, mine goes something like: swab top of vial, swab injection site, pull plunger on syringe to desired mark, wait for top of vial to dry, when dry remove cap from needle, insert/ draw oil, inject, remove needle, swab vial again before storing. I store vial in drawer in a sealed ziploc bag.

Also how long had that vial been open?

Not asking these things suspecting you did anything wrong - realize this is always a remote possibility.

You lapsed somewhere in the cleanliness department is the obvious cause or assumption. I can't think that we've had some one with a real infection from an injection.

That pic is of when they took the packing off.

The abscess has been removed.

There was no puss or other fluid.

It was the actual testosterone itself.

All 3 doctors - the surgeon, the infectious disease doctor, and the general doc - say they think it was a freak accident.

I'm fine.

I'm recovering. I'm taking my antibiotics.

Definitely a freak accident. I use the same needle on average 3 times and have been doing for the last 3 years without incident. It is very difficult to obtain my sharps in the country I live and work in and imports will get me into trouble, hence the reusing criteria.
