Elderly men over 65 benefit as much from testosterone treatment as do younger men

Elderly men over 65 years of age with late-onset hypogonadism benefit as much from testosterone treatment as do younger men.

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential benefits of testosterone administration to elderly men (>65 years) with late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) in comparison with younger men and to assess the safety of testosterone administration to elderly men.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 561 hypogonadal men from two registry studies were divided into age groups of </=65 years (group Y, n=450; range, 32-65 years) and >65 years (group O, n=111; range, 66-84 years). Following an initial 6-week interval, all men were treated with 3-month injections of parenteral testosterone undecanoate for up to 6 years.

RESULTS: Over the 6 years, there was a progressive decrease of body weight and waist circumference. Beneficial effects on lipids and other metabolic factors and on psychological and sexual functioning progressed over the first 24 to 42 months and were sustained. Rather than a deterioration, there was an improvement of urinary parameters. Prostate volume and prostate-specific antigen increased moderately. Hematocrit levels increased but remained within safe margins.

CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of restoring serum testosterone in men with LOH were not significantly different between men older than 65 years of age and younger men. There were no indications that side effects were more severe in elderly men. The effects on prostate and urinary function and hematocrit were within safe margins. Age itself need not be a contraindication to testosterone treatment of elderly men with LOH.

In all of these studies on older men dating back 10-20 years, the test patients were aging men who had never previously been on TRT before. Also, they did not include HCG as an adjunct in the studies. Also, the men in some of the studies were suffering from chronic illness.

If I were to buy 200 old vehicles with 200k plus mileage and then switch them to synthetic motor oil and an octane booster and run a test on how they performed... Well, the outcome would be predictable as the damage was already done.

I would like to see a study done on men who took their own destiny in their hands at a younger age and started TRT (correctly) and measure them against those who did not. I would wager a significant amount that the results would be dramatic.

The signs begin to manifest in your 30's, symptoms become more apparent in your 40's. That is the time to act, not at 74 when it's too late.

The real tragedy is that uninformed mainstream doctors read flawed studies and implement them in their practice. One of the greatest tragic, misinformed and politically motivated train wrecks of all time was the Womens Initiative. We are just now seeing that for what it it was.

This basically blows the FDA’s claim out of the water, that older men without hypogonadism won’t benefit and therefore shouldn’t be prescribe TRT.

Dr. Khera said that testosterone doesn’t decline due to aging alone, it’s the acquisition of medical problems, obesity, type 2 diabetes/metabolic syndrome, that lead to the decline in testosterone, because healthy older men with no disease have high testosterone.
