In the hospital. Almost died of low potasium

Buy Lab Tests Online
I collapsed at home Wednesday after a hard day at work, started experiencing partial paralasys. i couldnt get up, lost all control of my legs, most of my upper body. I was rushed by wife to emergency room. After admittance and getting thru triage, my blood test for potasium came back at 2.0. My doctor said there is no way it could be that low and it had to be a lab error so a second blood sample was sent downstairs. It also came back 2.0.

Normally, your blood potassium level is 3.6 to 5.2 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). A very low potassium level (less than 2.5 mmol/L) can be life-threatening and requires urgent medical attention.

I have now spent 2 days in the hospital getting multiple potasium IVs, got my # back up to 3.9. Problem now is what caused it to crash. I have been on TRT for 8 weeks to no avail and found no improvements in how I feel. this may be why. I plan to continue my TRT during this.

I have labs being taken in the morning. The specialist states the body can only dump postasium either thru poop or piss. If its poop that usually diareeha that I have not had. He states some hormone is telling my kidneys to dump potasium thru urine in error. Tests for which hormone that is starts tomorrow morning AM.

Hope you all enjoy the picture. I am feeling much better and can walk again lol, clench a fist, push a button on a I Phone and wiggle my toes. Which before I could not. Doc said if I had went just a few more hours I could have died as my sinus rhythm with my heart was so out of sorts. More to follow.

That is funny! Glad you are on the upswing. Prayers that they can quickly find the issue with an easy solution!

OK I am home, feel so much better. I just looked at my online labs the hospital posted my blood tests to. I would like to post all of it later and get everyone's opinion on it all. The one thing really stands out from this morning blood tests was the 8AM early morning Cortisol test.
What do you experts think about very low Cortisol?

Glad you are home and feeling better Lee. Yeah that morning cortisol sure is low.. wonder what they will do with that. Also tell me how did the MD's treat you when they learned you were on TRT? Did they question you? or suggest you to stop it? Just curious what their response was. Also I take florinef because of low aldosterone and that drug states that you my need to supp potassium. Just wanted to mention that in case you are on it.

I am supposed to call a Endo that they suggested Monday to schedule a follow up on the low Cortisol.

As for the TRT, my Urologist is a Wellstar Doctor and my Cardiologist as well. The Hospital I was in is a Wellstar hospital (Kennestone). All of my Wellstar medical info including my TRT protocol and all TRT blood tests is in my online Wellstar Portal so they knew all about it as soon as they accessed my portal documents.

I did mention it and they acted like it was nothing and told me to continue all my medications. The ER doctor mentioned he knew my urologist and thought highly of him.

I suspect this Endo also is a known colleague of my Urologist as they are on the same floor in the building.

You can better believe I will have some TRT questions for the Endo about the TRT I am on and why it seems so few mainstream medical doctors prescribe HCG.

I am taking potassium supplements in the interim until its figured out lol.

That ER docotr told me he has never seen a otherwise healthy man with no apparent issues come into the ER with such low potassium. He brought in 2 medical students who were in the ER that night to talk to me as he thought it was such and interesting case that he wanted to share with them lol.

Because my EKG was so bad they wpouldnt discharge me till it cleared which it did this afternoon and was back to normal. It was really scary in the ER watching that monitor beat so out of step and feeling my heart beat to the same eractic rythm while watching it.

I am going to post my pre and post labs shortly.

Congrats on being a "teaching tool" for young DRs:)
You could be the reason that some unlucky person in the future, with the same situation, is saved from death by one of those 2 DRs.

Lee

I am so sorry to hear, man. Glad you are better.

Were you on a diuretic?

Causes of potassium loss include:

No Sir, I was not on a diuretic, no vomiting or anything on your list. I even worked all that day. That was whats so strange about it, not any good excuse for it. The low Cortisol may have something to do with the low potasium, or nothing at all and is just a coincidence. Thats what the Endo is supose to tell me, I hope.

Here are all my labs from my hospital stay. They are in backwards chronological order.

Wow Great report Lee thank you. So glad to read you are home and feeling better.

Very good FL, yes the phosphorus was also low and they gave me a IV bag of that also.

I had 8 bags of IVs in a 36 hour period, plus potassium tablets and several glasses of OJ with potassium and phosphorus powder in them as well.

Its obvious to me I have to make major lifestyle changes with diet and eating 95% Cow, Pig and Chicken aint going to cut it any longer.

In order to get the recommended amount of potassium each day would require a person eating 9 Bananas every single day alone. I cant do that lol.

Of course there are other foods one could eat besides bananas lol.

Gatorade has only 1% of the US RDA lol, nothing in Gatorade. The Centrum Silver multi vitamins with minerals I have been taking have 0% potassium. None, nada, not a drop. I was stunned to discover that after reading the label.

Its Saturday, its my TRT shot day. It will be my 10th injection of 100MG every 7 days. I'm not close to giving up on this yet.

What I want to find out from my up coming Urologist TRT doctor visit and from this Endo I will be seeing soon is why I have the perception that the majority of Mainstream Medical doctors don't prescribe HCG and why people like the majority on this forum that use HCG have to go to TRT specialist clinics or the black marker to get it.

I don't buy into the theory that all of these highly trained Endos and Euros doctors are all totally clueless about HCG and don't know abut HCG,..... and only the TRT clinics do.

There has to be other reasons and I have my suspicions as to why, but I will be asking them both and pressing them for a specific answer about HCG. Do they know about it, do they prescribe it, if not why not and will follow up here with what they both tell me.

Have you had any Corticosteroid use before this happened? I think usually Potassium is lowered when you have high Cortisol. You look like what someone would that stopped taking Prednisone too fast. I have read about it but I am no expert. We get HCG from the cash only doctors because insurance don't cover it and regular doctors go by the standard insurance protocol. Insurance pays for it if your going to a fertility clinic where they will know all about it.

Wondering about 3 things in the tests:

-This shows up repeatedly, I don't think you commented on this previously on this thread, : "Comment: HIGH DOSES OF BIOTIN TAKEN WITHIN 8 HOURS OF BLOOD COLLECTION MAY INTERFERE WITH THE RESULTS OF THIS ASSAY"

-Glucose was high on all results. I'm assuming for one that you were not fasting for any of the tests, but any relation to kidneys? With diabetes, kidneys can kick into high gear from high blood glucose/ketones/acidosis. I don't know how to interpret ph in the test results, but could excreting potassium also be a result?

- As FL noted, Phosphorus was also low.
