I have been reading the grapefruit seed extract posts in regards to lowering hct. My question is at what dose did you have success lowering hct. I just began using 50 mg of GSE (grapefruit seed extract) from bulk supplements. I know this is a hit or miss for some of y'all.

My HCT is usually in the high 40's to low 50's. I've been taking Naringin (Grapefruit Seed Extract) for awhile. In my consult with Defy, they recommend it.
I also recently started Nattokinase. It is a blood thinner and some say that it also lowers HCT.
I just had my labs done, so I'll know more soon.

Metformin is also supposed to lower HCT. I take it daily.

HCT is an issue for me because I live at a mile high altitude. Dehydration is also a factor for me as I am in the high desert. I've never donated blood.

How many mg's are you consuming of GSE? Did it help you maintain your HCT between the ranges you mentioned? I have my consult with Defy tomorrow and I will ask them how much they recommend to take.

Hmmm..nattokinase, huh? I will look into that as well. How much of that are you taking?

I did not know metformin helps to also thin the blood. I will also mention that. I take berberine hcl with hydroxypropyl beta cyclodextrin at a 1:1 ratio.

I don't want to donate blood again since my iron is at 75. My HCT is at 53.3 and that's because of nandrolone. I usually sit between 50 and 52 for my HCT.

Dehydration is also a big factor. I forget the ratio, but there is a ratio between HCT and your red cell blood count to determine if you are dehydrated. You can google it. Typically, I am a bit dehydrated as I live in the desert.

I was taking 1000 mg of Narigin each morning but upped it to 1500. I did help maintain my levels, albeit still considered too high by some.

Yes, dehydration is a big factor but not for me. I drink 1.5 to 1.75 gallons of water per day. Before I get my labs done I drink slightly more than half a gallon of water.

I will take 1000 mg of gse and see what happens. I will test my HCT in a week to see if it has helped or not. Hopefully that's long enough to notice results. Yeah, you're levels and mine are considered high for a few people out there. Thanks for the dose information.

How much nandrolone have you added to your protocol to cause that increase in hematocrit?

I was considering this but grapefruit(naringin) can interfere with the absorption of too many oral medications, they continually add more and more every year. don’t take it if you use viagra or cialis

it also interferes with the metabolism of estrogen.

The appropriate dose of naringin to lower hematocrit levels is not definitively established, but several studies and sources provide some guidance on effective dosages and their safety.
  1. Study on Grapefruit Ingestion: A study involving the ingestion of grapefruit, which contains naringin, showed that consuming half to one grapefruit per day significantly lowered hematocrit levels in human subjects over a 42-day period. The decrease in hematocrit was statistically significant at the p < 0.01 level, indicating a strong effect.
  2. Supplementation Studies: Naringin supplements are available in various dosages. For instance, a safety and pharmacokinetics study found that doses ranging from 150 mg to 900 mg of naringin were safe for healthy adults, with serum concentrations proportional to the dose administered. This suggests that a dose within this range could be effective and safe.
  3. General Recommendations: Some sources recommend a daily dose of naringin in the range of 40 to 80 mg/kg body weight for various health benefits, including its potential to lower hematocrit levels. This dosage can vary based on individual factors such as age, weight, and overall health.
  4. Commercial Supplements: Commercially available naringin supplements, such as those from Swanson, typically come in 500 mg capsules with a recommended dosage of one capsule twice per day. Another product suggests a daily intake of 600 mg, divided into two doses of 300 mg each.
Given these findings, a practical approach would be to start with a lower dose, such as 300 mg twice daily, and adjust based on individual response and under medical supervision. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen, especially for managing specific health conditions like elevated hematocrit levels.

Ingestion of grapefruit lowers elevated hematocrits in human subjects
Robbins, R C ; Martin, F G ; Roe, J M
International journal for vitamin and nutrition research, 1988, Vol.58 (4), p.414

This study was based on in vitro observations that naringin isolated from grapefruit induced red cell aggregation and evidence that clumped red cells are removed from the circulation by phagocytosis. The effect on hematocrits of adding grapefruit to the daily diet was determined using 36 human subjects (12 F, 24 M) over a 42-day study. The hematocrits ranged from 36.5 to 55.8% at the start and 38.8% to 49.2% at the end of the study. There was a differential effect on the hematocrit. The largest decreases occurred at the highest hematocrits and the effect decreased on the intermediate hematocrits; however, the low hematocrits increased. There was no significant difference between ingesting 1/2 or 1 grapefruit per day but a decrease in hematocrit due to ingestion of grapefruit was statistically significant at the p less than 0.01 level.

To lower HCT, some members eat a 1/2 of grapefruit

would the grapefruit interfere with losartan? or carvedilol?

Grapefruit juice blocks special enzymes in the wall of the small intestine that actually destroys many medications and prevents their absorption into the body. Thus, smaller amounts of the drugs get into the body than are ingested. When the action of this enzyme is blocked, more of the drugs get into the body and the blood levels of these medications increase. This can lead to toxic side effects from the medications.

I understand how it generally effects medications and I’ve researched it specifically for viagra: I guess I should’ve asked, what do you guys think would be the greatest danger?

Conclusions: Grapefruit juice increases sildenafil bioavailability and tends to delay sildenafil absorption. Sildenafil pharmacokinetics may become less predictable with grapefruit juice. Although patients usually will not be endangered by concomitant use of grapefruit juice, it seems advisable to avoid this combination.”

I've been looking for info on grapefruit extract and telmisartan because I'd like to get it for hct as well, but haven't found anything concrete.
