Hi, I'm married to the BugMan and will be posting more frequently than he. (got more time, I like the computer more than he does, and have more medical experience!).

We both have been on and off the Testosterone replacement bandwagon. He's read here quite a bit in the past, so we thought it a good idea to join and share/glean new info and ideas from the forum.

BugMan (hypogonadal) has had T pellets (testopel in 2013) and T cypionate injections (began in 2014 til this Feb., administered by me, the wife). He's currently OFF all T therapy and it's beginning to take it's toll on him. Another reason we're here.

He developed polycythemia which was discovered in a scary trip to the ER with nausea, vomiting, dangerously high BP and dizziness. They ruled out neurological and cardiac issues but discovered the high hematocrit. He's had 4 therapeutic phlebotomies so far and is in normal range now.

His anti-aging Doc (well known in this area for good, responsible T treatments) was arrested (long story) so he appealed to the family doc. The family guy is T-positive for the most part, but has declined to re-write BugMan's prescription based on his last labs and out of concern for high estradiol and the polycythemia. I think he has high estradiol again, and T levels might be too low (fatigue, lack of sleep, etc). So here we are.

That's all for now...thanks for being here!

He, and you, have been through a lot. You mentioned recent labs - can you post them, with the reference ranges?

Thanks for reminding me...I need to request them from the doctor. All I have at this point is "your free T looks good", but as this ain't our first rodeo, we know we need to see the numbers and ranges ourselves. Will post ASAP.

Hello BugMan's Wife

What is his hematocrit now? Where do you guys live? It saddens me that he had to stop TRT and has had problems accessing it after the doc went to jail. We can direct you to some resources.

How was he doing on the injections before the polycythemia incident happened?

Welcome. Many resource here and some great TRT providers to get BugMan back onto cutting edge TRT and away from the reluctant family PC.

Hi Nelson,
His last Hb was 14.2 - about 2 weeks ago. The blood bank took his blood anyway, but I don't imagine he'll need to go back any time soon. As I mentioned, he's not getting any supplemental T now.

He was doing very well on the T injections. We went from 1ml IM weekly to .5 ml bi-weekly after reading a lot of studies on smaller doses more frequently helping with aromatization and leveling him out better. Fortunately he's no sissy about shots, and I give them (and told I'm good at it ;-)

Forgot to answer this. We live in Dayton, OH. Our Primary care guy has said he's open to prescribing T, and seemed to know most of what he should (I ask lots of questions). One of our biggest issues right now is income. Not enough to pay for "concierge medicine" and out of pocket for non-covered specialty treatments. BTDT. With all the medical bills incurred in Feb, it's hard to justify more labs now just to recheck his T levels, but I think we may need to soon anyway.

If we stick with the primary care guy, our insurance covers most of it. Another reason we left the guy who was arrested was he was in the stratosphere money-wise, and I'm sure that's no surprise to anyone here.

Since I have medical background, I'm maybe a PITA about stuff, but I'm more informed than the average patient. I walk the BugMan through most of his medical stuff.

Back with labs

Finally got the results from doctors office. Labs were last checked on 4/6/16.

Free Testosterone (Direct) = 7.5 (RANGE 7.2-24.0)
Testosterone = 400 (RANGE 72-623)
PSA = 3.0 (RANGE 0.0-4.0)

Not checked: SHBG

I can tell you now, that symptomatically my husband is running just about on empty. He works harder this time of year, putting in about 12 hrs a day, sometimes more, and usually half day on Sat. Some hours in the heat, some carrying a 40 lb backpack.

He gets home from work these days and is drained. No energy for anything, but he's still trying to get some HIIT sessions in and working his abs with the Ab Roller. That's about it.

I would recommend giving serious consideration to going out of pocket with a TRT specialist like Defy Medical. Its not expensive and they can get him straightened out quickly. Life is too short to live it feeling like he is at present.

Chris, I had not either. The last labs he had drawn were from the anti aging doc's lab and the ranges were much higher. And BugMan was running in the high 800s to 1100 at one point.

Great news!

Another thing - no need to do deep IM with the large gauge needles. Most of us here use insulin syringes between 27 and 29 gauge that are either 1/2" or 5/8" long and inject in the shoulder or thigh. Far less pain that way no mater what.
