Phosphodiesterase Type 5 Inhibitors and Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Posted: 01 Oct 2014

Barreto MA, Bahmad Jr F. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors and sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Braz J Otorhinolaryngol 2013;79(6):727-33.

Phosphodiesterase type 5 Inhibitors, such as sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil have been increasingly used today and some of the users have developed sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: To present two patients with sudden deafness developed after an occasional use of the drug and review studies on the use of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors and sudden hearing loss.

METHOD: Analytical study of two cases and review of the subject matter in the Pubmed/Medline and Bireme databases using the keywords: phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors and sudden deafness and its correlates in the English language.

RESULTS: The patients analyzed are young without additional disorders, using phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, and after combination treatment for sudden hearing loss only one had hearing improvement. We found nine scientific studies and reviewed preclinical studies, clinical trials, prospective and cross-sectional investigations.

CONCLUSION: Increased occurrence in clinical practice and scientific reports in the literature suggest that the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors are considered a risk factor for sudden deafness. Further studies with larger samples and control groups are needed for better assessing this association.

I think this very likely happened to me. I had perfectly normal hearing and within seconds lost all the hearing in my right ear in Feb 2013. I had taken Levitra the evening before. It has been much more of a disability than I could have ever imagined losing the hearing in one ear could be. The constant tinnitus (ringing noise) prevents me from hearing normal conversation. The Otologist says my hearing will never return. I am too terrified of losing the hearing in my left ear to ever take ED pills again.

i knew the ED drugs have side effects. So, i didn't use any of them until someone said it has no side effects on them. But most of them didn't work what i expected. Heard about this med called "Caverta" then and believe me, i have been using it for quite sometime and with no side effects and it works for me pretty well,

here's a review:

see if it helps you.

This medication is the same ingredient as Viagra. Same 100 mg strength. but more expensive than most online pharmacies. It will have the same side-effects as Viagra; namely nasal congestion, indigestion and headache.

ED pills have adverse effects, no doubt. But you can neglect these effects by approaching a professional physician. Most of the adverse effects experienced by those men who are dealing with the serious health complications like diabetes, heart diseases and abnormal blood pressure.

Thanks for the information. I have tried ED pills in the past and they've worked ok, but I never knew they could cause sudden loss of hearing.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES:

Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE) inhibitors are a relatively new class of drugs introduced in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary artery hypertension. Recent concerns regarding these drugs and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) have resulted in an FDA requirement for more stringent labeling. In this report, we further investigate the potential link between SSHL and use of these drugs.
STUDY DESIGN:

Report of two cases and review of FDA postmarketing data.
METHODS:

Retrospective review.
RESULTS:

Twenty-five patients were evaluated in our study with a variable amount of information available on each patient. Fifteen patients (88%) experienced the event within 24 hours of taking a PDE-5 inhibitor. Eight patients (32%) had associated vertigo concurrently with their hearing loss. Ninety-six percent of reported cases were unilateral. Complete resolution of hearing was noted in five patients (20%), whereas three other patients (12%) had at least partial improvement. Therefore, eight patients (32%) had documented improvement in their hearing from initial presentation.
CONCLUSIONS:

Although the data are inconclusive, there is a potential link between PDE-5 inhibitor use and SSHL. Otolaryngologists should, therefore, inquire regarding PDE-5 inhibitor use as a potential cause of SSHL. Although there is currently no direct evidence for a mechanism of this side effect, we postulate that it is related to the prolonged effects of intracellular cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) within the cochlea.

As per my experience, It may happen but vary rare. The most common side effects experienced by men after taking anti-ed pills are blur vision, dizziness, upset stomach, headache, nausea etc.

Hi Nelson,

Are you concerned at all with taking low dose phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor's with their connection to hearing loss?

"Use of PDE5 inhibitors is associated with a small but significantly increased risk of sudden SNHL "
Everything in life, including TRT and ED drugs, has a benefit-to-risk ratio depending on the person. We all decide what risks we are willing to take for the benefits we get.

It’s true, the risk reward ratio is what’s it’s all about. You know this best of all with everything you’ve needed to do to keep HIV under control. I appreciate everything you’re learned and shared!
I’m still waiting to hear how your experiment is going with the combination of test. cyp and cream!

The combo of scrotal cream plus T injections has really not made me feel any different. Probably a little more libido. But I am such an unusual man: 60 years old and on TRT for over 30 years. I am not a good test subject at all!

Interesting, thanks for sharing! In my opinion, part of the reason people feel better on the cream is because of the high blood levels of testosterone, DHT, and varying degrees of metabolic dysfunction being one of the main reasons. 1/3 of the population has metabolic dysfunction which causes lethargy, inflammation and fatigue.... Metabolism is everything! I'm going to start a discussion on metabolic dysfunction. In my experience, Metformin combined with a 11B HSD1 inhibitor greatly improves my metabolism. If anything should be combined with metformin I think it should be a 11B HSD1 inhibitor as metformin increases tissue levels of this enzyme causing decreases in other metabolic parameters. There's of course many other aspects of metabolism I'll be bringing up.

Sorry to hear this happened to you. How long had you been using Levitra at this point? Had you only used it a few times, or had you been using it somewhat regularly for a long time before this happened?
