Cachexia - A loss of body mass that's common to cancer patients. Almost 20% of cancer-related deaths are attributed to this syndrome which is marked by a rapid and/or severe loss of fat and skeletal muscle. A recent study in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia, and Muscle shows that testosterone therapy is effective at combatting cachexia and improving the quality of life for patients. This is important because, to date, there are no established therapies these challenges faced by cancer patients.

  • During a five year, National Cancer Institute funded study, patients with squamous cell carcinoma were treated with standard care chemotherapy and/or radiation in addition to seven weeks of testosterone therapy or placebo.
  • Patients receiving testosterone maintained total body mass and increased lean body mass by 3.2%.
