What other non-psychiatry treatments for depression are there?

I read that certain foods can affect mood and help in regulation of chemicals that are responsible for depression and anxiety. Doctors recommend eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and a Mediterranean Diet for B Vitamins.

I didn't have a good experience with mushrooms.

I believe a standardized extract was used in the trials of those with PTSD and depression. it was administered in a controlled environment. Mushrooms can contain multiple psychoactive compounds. There are hundreds of species and sub-species each having varying proportions of compounds and vastly different effects. The freshness and even the place they are grown will effect the proportions of active substances contained therein. Experimentation with species and doses is required if one wants to go with natural mushrooms. Before any journey is attempted one should first have engaged in deep introspection with the the help of texts and meditation.

It may very well be less simple than it appears.

What was assessed and what are the numbers? If only TSH, and that number is above 2, your doc may have no clue that you actually do have a thyroid issue.

This is taken from my MyChart test result:

My bloodwork showed normal thyroid results.

There is a WORLD of difference between "being within range (normal)" and being "Optimal".
And "Yes".... Being hypothyroid CAN cause depression.....
That also includes being "within range (normal)", but at the low end of the range......

Find a DR that that understands thyroid and treats to "symptoms" and not "ranges"....

Mountain Man,

I have a bit of a different, yet related question. My situation is I generally am not anxious at all and I have never suffered with depression. However, I am a shift worker and police officer and at times, will suffer with pretty bad insomnia which does lead to a degree of anxiety of course. As the years have gone on, I have pretty much figured the bulk of my problem out to be essentially sleep anxiety (worry about health, worry about getting enough sleep, worrying about being able to fall asleep etc). The shift work triggered this problem initially and still has a hand in it I am sure, but the issue is more an internal one for me now. CBT looks to be an effective way to help address this. Which of your books would be most appropriate for me to start working on my unique situation?
