Why are dental implants considered cosmetic ( if you need them to eat?)

Hey there all,

I am Joe and have been HIV+ since 1987. Had dental problems since my 30's but neglected it all till I got sober in 2004. But in the last 3-4yrs my dental problems have progressed and been losing teeth and have gum disease. No major pains but eating is a challenge. I am still working full time and just turned 65, and no plans on retiring until I can't work anymore (at least full-time) And I live in the Bay Area so it's $$! So I have been going thru the research dating part of seeing dentists/periodontists and trying to get a sense of what the costs and direction I need to go. I have been quoted anywhere from $15k per 4 in one denture? Also $70k for the whole thing? WTF???? Anyway, contacted UCSF dental college in San Francisco which could cost much less but you have to live in SF and I live in the East Bay. Heard this thing called dental grants but only see them online and figuring they are a scam! Anyway wanted to put it out there to see if anyone has any advice or resources?

Medical prices in US are insane and the insurance doesn't want to pay anything, that's why. The answer is medical tourism to a cheaper country. Unfortunately, many cheaper places abroad will refuse to work with HIV+ because there are no laws against such a discrimination. Prime example where this will be a problem is Turkey.

NorCal is a bit of a drive, but when I used to live in L.A. in my poorest days, i did go to Tijuana for dental work. with such major work needed, Mexico, or some other cheaper country is your answer. the medical system there is not inferior to the USA, maybe even better, if you have cash. if you can effort a month off or so, going there, renting a place, getting teeth fixed, and you will still have tons of money saved.

Probably because their are cheaper alternatives, like dentures. But I agree with you, that classifying the restoration of teeth, like vision and hearing, shouldn't be considered non essential.

Dental implants have two functions: restorative and cosmetic. Of course, the first thing to think about is your health. Without teeth, it is difficult to chew food. Consequently, unchewed food enters the stomach, making it more difficult to function. From an aesthetic point of view, it can be said that missing teeth do not look very nice.
