First of all can I say a big thank you for whoever started this site, I have spent hours scouring the web for good info, ultimately resorting to research articles for reliable material.
To cut a long story short about 3 years ago I started to experience symptoms of depression and reduced libido, things just weren't quite what they used to be! I was 56 and was OK with the idea that life was not going to be the same as 36, but sexually it seemed a bit early. Based on some material I had read years before, I thought, OK, lets look at Testosterone, found an andrologist who explained everything and indicated need for a test, which seemed rather expensive so managed to see an endocrinologist through the national health service - full range of checks and he said depression not testosterone - still in denial went back to andrologist who said results were just outside the range to consider TRT and that maybe I should consider depression as a cause.
Finally accepted this and off to a psychiatrist, explained the journey, chat about life and that I was not going to top myself and she gave me serotonin re-uptake inhibitors.
After several weeks, feeling a whole lot happier with life and impressed with SRRI's, only to realise my libido had switched off! It really was like a switch, from OK but could be better, to not interested at all and erection a problem - getting it and keeping it! Read the small print and research to find that a small percentage of men are affected like this. How is that for irony?
Went through several alternatives to SRRI's and saw another psychiatrist, before coming off tablets after two years, a bit of depression here and there but more life stuff than the darker times. But my libido, erection and orgasm is just not the same.
I bit of a bummer really as the initial thought that got me on this path was lowered libido / satisfaction with life!!!!!!!!!!!!
I find that is starting to effect my marriage, not just sexually although desire has always been an important part of love for me, but that rows seem to hang around for longer and so on.................I'd really appreciate any ones thoughts on this, and whether I should consider TRT.

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum...you came to the right place!

First and foremost, most Doctor's are not trained in hormone replacement for men nor do they have a complete understanding of the symptoms of age related androgen deficiency.

The two things they prescribe the first are Viagra and AD pills...both of which will not cure a man.

You need to find a Physician who is highly trained in Testosterone Replacement Therapies in men and get a complete work up done including a physical and blood work and get the correct assessment.

The forums here and the stickies in them are designed to help educate you on Testosterone Replacement and other supplements to get your mojo back...and it will come back!

Low libido and erectile dysfunction are hallmark signs of low testosterone and given you age it almost always is age related.

I urge you to read the forum stickies (the threads at the top of each forum), view the videos and read as much as you can.

In fact, you should read Nelson's book "Testosterone: A Man's Guide" and learn as much as you can and when you do...find the the right Doctor.

Truest me when I tell you that Testosterone Replacement is a godsend for men when done correctly!

Thanks for this,
Tried wellbutrin after the SRRIs as this is often the first choice with this situation. Not a lot of help, so research led me to coaxil; not bad but hard to manage as 3xday, but will look into the other two as well.
Small steps:)
Much appreciated

Yes, I tried it but the short half life sucks. I kept forgetting the middle dose.

Buspirone at night before bed is not bad but it also needs to be dosed twice daily but it can cause fatigue during the first hour and then your mood improves. Some guys take it when they get up to pee at night

Just for info and a partial conclusion: After much research and a sympathetic doctor I tried selegiline 5mg. It definitely improved libido, although has not "fixed" everything since the ssri's. I am into month 4 and there is a slow but steady improvement. Its cheap and as far as i can see generally well tolerated. Hope this helps.
Just an aside - I was diagnosed with pancreatitis about a year ago and the consultant told me that it was alchohol related - not bringing etc but high social consumption over 35 years = 3-4 glasses wine ... with weekends being more. That my pancreas and the hormones that it secretes (presumably) is a quarter of its normal size may have been a contributory factor to the initial declining libido - that and alchohol. The message (for me) is that maybe there is no need to look to far for the reason (to the initial concerns)....OK I know its more complicated than this, but......
Thanks to all the comments and to this site - keep it up;)
