BELSOMRA is the only prescription sleep aid that targets and inhibits the action of orexin.
Orexin is a central promoter of wakefulness. By inhibiting orexin, BELSOMRA is thought to help quiet the wake pathway.

BELSOMRA contains suvorexant, a Schedule IV controlled substance.

BELSOMRA is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant and can impair daytime wakefulness even when used as prescribed. Prescribers should monitor for somnolence and CNS depressant effects, but impairment can occur in the absence of symptoms, and may not be reliably detected by ordinary clinical exam. CNS depressant effects may persist in some patients for up to several days after discontinuing BELSOMRA.

I asked my sleep specialist doc at my last visit a couple of weeks ago. She is the head of the sleep dept of a large teaching hospital. She hasn't written a single prescription for it yet because it is not covered by insurance and the studies showed it wasn't any better than ambien(zolpidem).

Just saw this post - I tried it one time and that was the last. I experienced "sleep paralysis" - about an hour after taking I felt paralyzed, couldn't move, couldn't talk but I was fully awake. Lasted for a few hours and scared the crap out of me. I reported the reaction on FDA's watch site, got a call from an investigator and noted others had reported the same thing. So I can't recommend it.
