My doctor just put me on dutasteride for BPH. Currently been taking if for one week and have noticed some sexual side effects including low ejaculate volume that is also clear and some ED. I am currently taking 168mg testosterone cypionate per week for HRT as well. Are there any benefits from this combination as far as increasing more free testosterone or anything like that? I am trying to weigh out the positives and negatives of this drug to see if i want to continue usage. I saw a urologist who gave me a prostate exam and said my prostate was fine, however i was having all the symptoms of BPH and have been for years, so my GP doctor wrote me a script for dutasteride. I am also taking 0.4mg tamsulosin for the same issue. Any info or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would try to avoid the use of 5α-Reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) unless it was truly needed.

Talk it over with your doctor and suggest daily tadalafil.

Great! thanks for the advice. The dutasteride is definitely working and I would hate to go back to how I use to be before using the dutasteride. Does tadalifil really work just as well to relieve BPH symptoms? I pee so well now lol. Also, now that I mention it, I've noticed that my night time pees seem actually more restrictive than before... is there some type of weird phenomenon going on there? After I wake up in the morning, everything comes out normal. But during the night its restrictive.

I know men who have been on finasteride or dutasteride for years and have no issues at all. Decreased ejaculatory volume , to me, isnt a reason to go off. Dutasteride can shrink the prostate, thats why your doc put you on it. It will prevent your prostate from growing.
It will also prevent hair loss if thats a concern.

Sound's like the basis for another class action lawsuit concerning propecia and BPH treatments.

There are some men that don't report symptoms for years and when they tapper off the real problems begin. Taking finasteride is not without risk. Personally I would look to other safer lower risk options to deal with BPH.

I took finasteride for 15 days for BHP. I quit taking it when I noticed that the drug was shrinking the girth of my penis. The neck looked smaller and more flaccid than normal. My sex drive seemed fine until I decided to quit taking it. I did not fully recover my drive for 2 more months after quitting. Eventually my junk reinflated as well. Despite the 2 month recovery, I was lucky. There are apparently a good number of men who suffer more or less permanently after quitting.

I would not recommend finasteride.

I now get so so BPH results with a combination of Flomax and Cialis. Finasteride was better for BPH though. It just didn't agree with me.

All prescribed meds for the prostate have the side effects of decreased erectile ability, that is from noticeable to unable to get anything. Also, they decrease the ability to ejaculate so may have several session in a row without ability to ejaculate.

Since you now know this and if you decide to stop taking these meds, it will take at least 18 months to reverse the side effects, if the do reverse. These pills are a total killer for your sex life and your doctor barely mentions it unless he has personally taken it and experienced the side effects.

Instead, you can take prosta-strong by Irwin, the big one with most ingredients, and phytosterol complex with beta-sitosterol, and if you like, some extra saw palmetto. These will nourish the prostate and help with your issues. These take several weeks to see results as they are nutritional and herbal and will take time to integrate into the tissue and in your system. Snack on pumpkin seeds as they are high in zinc which the prostate needs a lot of.

In the old days before antibiotics, heave doses of zinc were recommended to build the prostate health so it could recover from infection.

I am really moving away from prescribing dutasteride or finasteride for BPH. The sexual side effects alone are enough, but post finasteride syndrome is a thing, and its a nightmare to treat.
My BPH pathway, in general (each individual patient is unique and their treatment plan must be focused on their unique needs) is tamulosin (flomax) daily to BID. Following that I will add low dose Tadalafil (5mg Cialis) daily OR if there is also some ED, 20mg Tadalafil every 3 days (twice a week). If that doesn't significantly reduce BPH to manageable level, then I recommend an evaluation for a minimally invasive in office procedure like Urolift or Rezume. To be honest I would prefer if I could get all my BPH patients to have Urolift or Rezume to get them off the meds and back to living life with a normal urine flow and function.

What’s the recommended treatment for PFS/post saw palmetto?
