In 26,000 healthy people, those taking statins to control cholesterol were a striking 87 percent more likely to become diabetic, said a recent Journal of General Internal Medicine database study.

“The increased risk of diabetes observed in this study is considerably higher than that in [recent] meta-analyses,” noted an accompanying editorial.

Lead author Ishak Mansi, M.D., of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs North Texas Health System, said the study surprised his own team. “We expected to find an association” between statins and diabetes “since it has been shown in other studies of sicker population,” he told Drug Discovery & Development. “But we did not expect an odds ratio of 1.87 in our healthy population, which is on the higher end of reported ratios.”

He was also surprised his study found a potential link between statins and diabetic complications. “We are the first to report this. It makes sense, if we need further confirmation.”
