    • Nuvigil (Modafinil): A Great Medication to Combat Fatigue, But Be Careful

      From Nuvigil.com:

NUVIGIL is a prescription medicine used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness (ES) due to one of the following diagnosed sleep disorders:

      Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

In patients with OSA, NUVIGIL is used along with other medical treatments for this sleep disorder. NUVIGIL is not a replacement for your current treatment. Consult your doctor about the importance of continuing your current OSA treatment while taking NUVIGIL

      Shift work disorder (SWD)

      Narcolepsy

You should be diagnosed with one of these sleep disorders before taking NUVIGIL. Sleepiness can be a symptom of other medical conditions that need to be treated.
NUVIGIL will not treat the sleep disorders mentioned above. NUVIGIL may help with the sleepiness caused by these conditions, but it may not stop all of your sleepiness.
NUVIGIL does not take the place of getting enough sleep.

Follow your doctor’s advice about good sleep habits and using other treatments.

COMMENTS: Armodafinil (brand name Nuvigil) is used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by narcolepsy (a condition of excessive daytime sleepiness) or shift work sleep disorder (sleepiness during scheduled waking hours and difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep during scheduled sleeping hours in people who work at night or on rotating shifts). Armodafinil is also used along with breathing devices or other treatments to prevent excessive sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome. Armodafinil is in a class of medications called wakefulness-promoting agents. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the area of the brain that controls sleep and wakefulness. Some insurance companies do not want to pay for it. It is not an amphetamine and it does not require a special prescription since it not a class III DEA regulated drug. Many doctors have samples so that you can try it before you commit to using it.

I got too anxious when I took a full dose. A quarter of a tablet (it contains 150 mg) worked fine for me only once or twice a day to keep me going if I had to work after a bad night sleep. A one month supply can last a long time if taken as needed and at a reduced dose. I did not take it after 3 pm since my sleep would be impaired.

You can try it for free with a doctor's prescription at: http://nuvigil.com/OnDemandCenter/TryNUVIGILFree.aspx

Nuvigil consistently gives me a very low grade headache at 75mg, which is significant because I rarely get headaches of any sort. I was told by a Nuvigil drug rep that the headaches (one of the most common side-effects) should resolve itself within a week or two of consistent usage. The problem with that solution is that I only use it when needed. You can get a 30-day free supply but after that it is extremely expensive ($1000+ for a month supply) and most insurances require preauthorization before they will cover it. However, as Nelson stated, you can minimally cut the tab in half so a months supply will last at least two months. If you have heart rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, it's vitally important not to over-dose and would be an intelligent idea to discuss the matter prior to use with both a sleep specialist and a Cardiologist.

Previously had intermittent headaches with 150mg dose, so Ive been cutting the 150mg tablets and taking 1/2 midway through the day with a cup of coffee, pretty effective.

The only symptom I get from time to time is shortness of breath, which has been previously stated.

Anyone have success with Adrafinil (OTC pre-cursor)?

There are very interesting studies about the actions of modafiil and its related compounds and enantiomers. Nuvigal is an example of the latter as it is a mono-chimeric form of modafinil (similar to Escitalopram, Lexapro, and Citalopram, Celexa). Personally for me, I am a non-responder to Modafinil and related compounds - apparently genetically linked to a polymorphism at the single nucleotide rs4680(A:A) in the infamout warrior gene - see Val158Met.

Back to the point, Nuvigil is now only available by prescription, but genius chemical types consistently alter the compound and sell it in a legal form. Today, Adrafinil is available legally. It is a prodrug of Modafinil, so it takes a bit to break down into modafinil once in the blood and it has separate metabolites. See http://examine.com/supplements/Adrafinil if you are interested. many online vendors. For me, I have tried these as I have ADHD and none have done anything save for slightly unpleasant mindset and light headaches.

Some guys seem to like adrafinil. I get anxiety with all of modafinil-lke drugs even at lower doses, but some high performing friends seem to do great.

Ceretropic is an excellent vendor of everything I have never heard of until I see it on their website! I've ordered a lot of products - rhodiola, some peptides, and others - all good quality and interesting to see the breadth of legal compounds out there.

Review of Modanifil Shows Drug Does Enhance Cognition

Professor Guy Goodwin, President of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) commented: 'This overview suggests that, on current evidence, modafinil enhances cognition independent of its known effects in sleep disordered populations. Thus, the authors say that 'modafinil may well deserve the title of the first well-validated pharmaceutical nootropic agent'. In other words, it's the first real example of a 'smart drug', which can genuinely help, for example, with exam preparation. Previous ethical discussion of such agents has tended to assume extravagant effects before it was clear that there were any. If correct, the present update means the ethical debate is real: how should we classify, condone or condemn a drug that improves human performance in the absence of pre-existing cognitive impairment?

I guess this is good news for those that have a prescription. Maybe if they sell it at an cheap enough price it will help us that get our Armodafinil on the grey market.

I've been using Provigil and Nuvigil for at least the past ten years and let me tell you, it's been a miracle drug for me. Over time, my mind has slowed to the point where I'd not notice if I'd dumbly used rhyming words in a sentence but on P/N I can catch a lot of those errors. There's lots more to this wonderment but I'll leave that for you to find out.
Sadly, a new insurance plan has ****ed me but good. A year ago, I could get Nuvigil for $5 / mo using a coupon. Now, that same coupon brings my price to $500. And, with blue cross blue shield where I live, the cost of generic is not much better, around $435.
Crap. It's a good thing I began stockpiling the stuff a few years ago. But I will be going on the graymarket soon to look for more, so if anyone has any suggestions for that, feel free to let me know.

Modafinil Enhances Attention and Alerting Performance in Healthy Volunteers

Modafinil treatment significantly enhanced alertness, energy, wit. The effect on clear-headedness almost reached significance (p = 0.071).

Unexpectedly, modafinil treatment did not significantly worsen self-reported tension/anxiety, calmness or tranquility. Modafinil is known to exacerbate anxiety in some people.
