      Article Preview SLEEP IS ANABOLIC

      Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale, M.D.

There are a lot of factors that impact on body composition including the two that are uppermost in most of our minds, the right kind of training and nutrition.

While training and nutrition are important, they’re not going to do much for your body composition if your body’s not in a position to make the best use of them.

That’s where getting the proper amount of sleep comes in.

      Body Composition Pipeline

My body composition pipeline will help us put sleep in context and make its role easier to understand.

Effort is a combination of enthusiasm, motivation, genetic ability, etc. It makes up the physiological and psychological foundation for success in sports and in life. But it’s not enough to give us the body composition results we want. For that we have to optimize our lifestyle, training, diet and nutritional supplement use.

      Video Transcript:

Hi. Dr. Osborne here with Web Wellness University. Today I want to talk a little bit about magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral. The body can't make it, you have to obtain it from the diet. It's one of those minerals that is largely deficient in a lot of people in the United States. There are several reasons why a person can become deficient in magnesium and so we're going to talk about what some of those reasons are and what some of the side effects and consequences of magnesium deficiency are. First of all let's start with some of the things that we know can induce a loss of magnesium. The first is stress. We know that chronic stress, and everybody's under stress but it's the chronic low-grade stress that's constantly there that contributes to long-term magnesium suppression, long-term magnesium deficiency. The other thing that's common, it causes a magnesium deficiency is diuretics. Diuretics can be a number of different things. One of the most commonly used diuretic is caffeine. People that wake up everyday and get their morning cup of Joe and they think that that is just fine and there's nothing wrong with one cup of coffee a day realize what you're doing and in part as you're inducing long-term chronic magnesium deficiency.

Before the advent of antibiotics, humans were at the mercy of infectious diseases such as bubonic plague, cholera and typhoid fever, which all had the potential to wipe out entire civilizations. Today, people living in developed nations are more likely to die from the so-called lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes or cancer.
Unfortunately, even if you strictly adhere to a whole food diet and get regular exercise, there’s no guarantee that you’ll remain disease free as you grow older. Factors such as genetics, stress, environmental elements and the aging process itself can all play a role in the genesis of disease. This is when the judicious use of pharmaceutical medications can be advantageous to your longterm health and quality of life.

      STRESS PROOF YOURSELF

Don't want to watch the video? Read the entire transcript below!

Being subjected to the occasional stressful situation is an unavoidable part of life that all living creatures have to endure. As humans, we’re equipped with a dynamic internal system called the “flight or fight” response enabling us to effectively handle acute intermittent stress. The flight or fight response evolved in humans during times when stressful situations were typically life and death struggles with wild predators, starvation or invading rival tribes.

When confronted with a perceived threat, the hypothalamus and pituitary glands in your brain prompt the release of the hormone cortisol from the adrenal glands along with the catecholamine epinephrine (otherwise known as adrenaline). This sets off a chain reaction that readies your body to evade danger by dilating the pupils, redirecting blood to muscles, shutting down digestion, increasing blood pressure and transporting stored fatty acids and glucose out into the bloodstream to fuel working muscles for combat or running away.

Testosterone Is Associated With Reduced All-Cause Mortality and Higher Dihydrotestosterone With Reduced Ischemic Heart Disease Mortality, While Estradiol Levels Do Not Predict Mortality -

In older men, having total T levels in the middle two quartiles at baseline predicted reduced incidence of death from any cause, as did having calculated free T or DHT levels in the third quartile. These associations could not be explained by age, overweight, or other risk factors, which were adjusted for systematically in the analyses. A higher DHT level was associated with reduced IHD mortality, but E2 was not associated with either mortality outcome.

In previous epidemiological studies generally using immunoassays, lower levels of total or free T have been associated with increased mortality without delineating a U-shaped association (7). For example, a case-control study of men aged 42 to 78 years with 825 deaths and 1489 survivors found reduced all-cause mortality in the third and fourth quartiles of total T (31).
