Do images of a personalized future body shape help with weight loss? A randomized controlled study.

Ossolinski G, et al. Trials. 2017.

BACKGROUND: This randomized controlled study evaluated a computer-generated future self-image as a personalized, visual motivational tool for weight loss in adults.

METHODS: One hundred and forty-five people (age 18-79 years) with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 25 kg/m2 were randomized to receive a hard copy future self-image at recruitment (early image) or after 8 weeks (delayed image). Participants received general healthy lifestyle information at recruitment and were weighed at 4-weekly intervals for 24 weeks. The image was created using an iPad app called 'Future Me'. A second randomization at 16 weeks allocated either an additional future self-image or no additional image.

Article Preview Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is one of the most effective methods for treating hypogonadism, erectile and sexual dysfunction. Sadly, as with any treatment, a minority of men may experience hair loss.

A small but concerning percentage of men (mostly under 45 years of age and with genetic predisposition to hair loss) undergoing TRT begin to notice that their scalp hair tends to thin drastically within 3 to 6 months of the hormone therapy. This isn't the case with all men, and it's still not quite clear WHY men undergoing TRT begin to lose their hair although some studies speculate that one of testosteroneís main metabolites, DHT, may exert negative effects on hair follicles. However, if you're unlucky enough to fall into the "going bald" category, you may be wondering what to do. After all, you can't stop the TRT, but you don't want to have to continue to lose your hair. It's like being caught between a rock and a hard place! What can you do?

Estradiol in Men: Fake News and Realities

Article Preview The Effects of Injected Testosterone Dose and Age on the Conversion of Testosterone to Estradiol and Dihydrotestosterone in Young and Older Men

The Testosterone Trials are set of multi-institutional, double blind, placebo-controlled studies aimed primarily at determining the efficacy of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) on sexual function, physical function, and vitality.

      • Seven hundred and ninety men over the age of 65 yr with symptoms of hypogonadism and a serum testosterone concentration of <275 ng/dl were randomized to receive either an initial dose of 5 g of 1% testosterone gel or placebo gel once a day.
      • Serum testosterone levels and improvement in symptoms were assessed at baseline and at 3 mo, 6 mo, 9 mo, and 12 mo.
      • Ninety-one percent of men maintained normalized testosterone levels throughout the duration of the study.
      • TRT improved sexual desire (DISF-M-II), frequency of sexual activity (Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4), and erectile function (International Index of Erectile Function).
This study adds to growing evidence that cardiovascular risk from TRT may be less than once feared. The increased risk of sleep apnea in men using TRT is noteworthy. The study strengths include the large number of healthy and young men exposed to TRT. Limitations include the retrospective study design inability to account for granular details of TRT use such as dosage, specific forms of TRT and serum testosterone levels pre- and post-TRT.

The evidence piles up that TRT is protective against heart disease. The abstract of this observational study says:

A cohort of 3,422 male United States military service members, retirees and their dependents, aged 40-64 was identified, who were prescribed TRT between 2006-2010 for low testosterone. Men in this cohort were matched on a 1:1 basis by age and comorbidities to men without a prescription for TRT. Event-free survival and rates of thromboembolism, cardiovascular events and OSA were compared between men using TRT and controls with a median follow-up of 17 months.

Article Preview During 2016, 27,760 men underwent breast-reduction surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. That marked a 36 percent increase since 2000. Some plastic surgeons say they have seen as much as a doubling or tripling of business over the past three years, despite the fairly hefty fees they charge ó $4,500 to $8,000, costs that are generally not covered by health insurance.

For gynecomastia sufferers who canít be helped by a change in a drug prescription, diet or exercise, breast surgery has become a more attractive alternative. Because improved technology allows patients to forgo general anesthesia, the surgery in most cases can be performed on an outpatient basis and the recovery time has been slashed considerably ...

      Pharmacologic Category: Supplement

General Information: Glycine is, structurally, the simplest amino acid that has been discovered. It was one of the earliest amino acids to be isolated from gelatin back in 1820. Glycine is one of the nonessential amino acids for mammals; meaning that they can create it internally from two other amino acids: serine and threonine (1).

Glycine is found principally in gelatin and silk fibroin. Itís been used therapeutically as a nutrient, and also functions as a rapid inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS) (2). Although glycine is both a simple and nonessential amino acid; experimental animals on low-glycine diets show reduced growth (1, 2). The average ...
FDA has identified an emerging trend where over-the-counter products, frequently represented as dietary supplements, contain hidden active ingredients that could be harmful. Consumers may unknowingly take products laced with varying quantities of approved prescription drug ingredients, controlled substances, and untested and unstudied pharmaceutically active ingredients. These deceptive products can harm you! Hidden ingredients are increasingly becoming a problem in products promoted for sexual enhancement.

Remember, FDA cannot test all products on the market that contain potentially harmful hidden ingredients. Enforcement actions and consumer advisories for tainted products only cover a small fraction of the tainted over-the-counter products on the market.
