Pregnenolone or DHEA: Which One to Take?

I tried using HCG to backfill my pathways but after numerous test I saw no improvement in my labs for Pregnenolone, Progesterone, or DHEA. Maybe HCG did not help me because I was on TRT for 12 years before even trying the HCG. I stopped taking the HCG and thought I would try supplementing with Pregnenolone and DHEA and bang, noticeably improvement right off the bat in my DHEA, Pregnenolone, and Progesterone.

I really wanted the HCG to work for me but it just did nothing for me. If i were to take one of the two, Pregenolone or DHEA, I would take Pregnenolone since it is upstream from DHEA in the hormonal cascade and Pregnenolone is considered the "grandmother" of all hormones. It is second to cholesterol in the hormonal cascade.

Personally I take both DHEA and Pregnenolone.

Nice reply. Ya HCG doesn’t seem to do much. I take 1000iu’s of HCG/ week with my TRT and although my DHEA-S level is in the upper third of the range, it’s the lowest it’s been in 3 years. And Progesterone has been going down a little as well. I’m hoping to hop on Pregnenolone and get a slight boost in both. Pregnenolone honestly seems like a miracle supplement. It’s very interesting that it works for some and not for others.

Dr. Rob Kominiarek, from the TOT round table, is basically obsessed with it, for good reason. I think he has most of his guys on it, as does Dr. Nichols I believe. Here’s a video of him explaining his thoughts on pregnenolone if anyone’s interested.

Dr Crisler is also a big fan of Pregnenolone. Many of these doctors start their patience's off on 100 mg of Pregnenolone and some on 100mg of DHEA as well. I have all their books and of course have always listened to the Roundtable. I spoke with Dr Nichols on the phone recently and he said if guys can handle DHEA (and some can't very well) he likes to see it as high as it can get without having side effects. He says 500 to 800 even 1000 ug/dl would be fine. Personally, I am just trying to get mine at the top of the range, which I have accomplished. I like all the doctor's on the round table even though they have some opposing views. I am probably somewhere in the middle. I have been playing phone tag with Dr Rob the last week and will probably take him on as my physician once we actually hook up. He is in Ohio and I am in Texas but tele-medicine is the way to go if you can't find a capable doctor where you live. I really like Dr Rob's philosophy and style.

I agree, I like his mind set and the way he thinks about things a lot. He knows his stuff. I didn’t realize he’s been doing this almost 30 years. He’s definitely a veteran in this field.

many trt specialists add dhea and pregnenolone in protocols for a reason trt supressed lh and you don't make those pre cursors to testosterone nobody studies what harm can be done to one if he lives with non existant or very supressed levels of those hormones imo it's dangerous to take trt without backfilling as nobody knows what can happen long term doing so there is no single study on that

I don’t know many docs who even test pregnenolone. Many say it’s either inaccurate or too expensive.
You're right, most don't test for Pregnenolone, but how many people are truly trying to backfill pathways? Likely only those on TRT and very few of those. Yes, is expensive to test, normally somewhere around $110. How accurate is it, I'm not sure to be honest with you. What I do know is my Pregenolone, Progesterone, and DHEA were virtually non-detectable on several blood tests prior to using HCG and after using HCG. I dropped HCG and started supplementing with Pregnenolone and DHEA and I number have consistently increase measurably.

For me, when I do something, I am pretty much all in. I wanted to backfill the pathways and have that feeling of well being I read so much about. HCG did not do that for me. However, after supplementing with DHEA and Pregnenolone, getting noticeably improved results, I do have that feeling of well being and I am calmer than I have ever been. I wish I had tried supplementing 13 years ago when I started TRT. So, for me, supplementing with Pregnenolone and DHEA has worked very well. For many it doesn't. I believe the test has to be somewhat accurate because after three tests showing these as non-detectable I have 4 tests showing a constant increase in DHEA, Pregnenolone and Progesterone.

We are all different.

Good answer. I will get my pregnenolone tested and see what my levels are. Lord knows I’ve had my dhea tested darn near every blood test but never pregnenolone.

Personally I take both DHEA and Pregnenolone.

From what I understand, production of DHEA and its downstream hormones (including the androgens like T and E) can be blocked by demand for cortisol - which is made (like DHEA) from Pregnenolone. Look up "pregnenolone steal" for interesting information about this. So in an individual with stress (isn't that most of us these days?) Pregnenolone suplementation without DHEA may not always do the trick.

All of these hormones are ultimately made from Cholesterol, so it is suggested that cholesterol blockers will have a significant effect on hormonal levels and balances.

Maybe I need to re think my 40mg lipitor? Could it be harming more than helping? I have good numbers now...

Wouldn't DHEA levels indicate a sign of pregn level as well. Meaning a good level of DHEA indicate that Pregn. should be within range. Unless those are completely independent

Ya I’ve always wondered this. My pregnenolone always comes back pretty much non detectable, but my DHEA and progesterone levels are always decent

Pregnenolone can convert to cortisol but DHEA cannot. So the former is better if you have low cortisol. I've tried them both at 10mg in the morning. Pregnenolone makes me angry and depressed so I stopped taking it.

Pregnenolone confuses the shit out of me. Mainly the dosing. Some people like you report taking 10mg and having adverse effects, yet others recommend 100-200mg. I just don’t understand how there can be such a large discrepancy between recommended dosages. It makes no sense to me.

This exists for a lof of supplements. I know folks who take 14000 IU of vitamin D daily but I myself take only 2000. Always start small!

Haha preach. But ya I agree. Starting low and going slow is probably the optimal approach to take with most things.
